First, I've never been to the dentist for anything but a cleaning in my 21 years. Well, I'm about to get my wisdom teeth extracted. The top two teeth will be a regular extraction since they are both all the way in and not covered by gums at all. The bottom two, however are severly impacted, and halfway covered with gums. They've told me that they will need to cut them into pieces and then pull them out. All of this should take a whopping 45 minutes of work. I am only getting laughing gas, a sedative, and local anesthesia because cost is a factor. Needless to say I'm a nervous wreck. I can't stand any mouth pain and I am scared to death of the thought of getting shots in my gums repeatedly. I was wondering if anyone can share a similar experience with me to soothe my anxiety. I was also wondering on a scale of 1-10 how much did it hurt during the procedure?

Hi, I can certainly understand your anxiety. I had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted a while back, and two of mine were impacted too (the bottom 2). I was a nervous wreck just like you, and I can assure you that on a scale of 1-10, the pain was a 1, if even that. The worst part is always the novacaine.(I don't like the shots, either, but it was just a sting.) I didn't even have laughing gas or a sedative or anything, except heavy novacaine.(About 4 shots) The only thing I felt was a deep pressure, and I could hear cracking noises. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought, and it was over fairly quickly, about 45 minutes, which didn't seem as long as it sounds.
I didn't have any swelling afterwards,(which differs with everyone) and all I did when I got home after the novacaine wore off was take over the counter Tylenol, and apply ice to my face for preventive measure in anticipation of any swelling.
It's easy for me to tell you not to be scared, but believe me, you willl be just fine : ) I hope this helps you, and I am sending good thoughts your way. Soon you will be smiling like this :-D

Reply:the meds you are getting will help you. you wont feel much pain. your mouth is a personal area so it does seem to make you nervous, but you will be fine. the meds you are getting is more than some people get so you will be fine and once the meds hit you you wont feel a thing
Reply:relax! :o) you are not going to be uncomfortable during the procedure. your lower 3rd molars are actually not "severely" impacted. you described them as partially erupted making them easier to access than many others. the 45 minutes you mentioned will include getting you sedated, getting you numb and then letting you "wake up" from the nitrous oxide. the surgeon will probably only work about 15 minutes to actually remove the teeth! it's amazing. i work in the oral surgery department of a university and want to assure you that if your caregivers didn't think they could make you comfortable without putting you to sleep, they would not have agreed to it. go ahead and put some jello in the fridge, get some movies for the weekend and follow your post-op instructions for icepacks and meds. you'll be just fine! best wishes!

Have terrible teeth like me?
I am Calvin. This is my first question, and I really just want to vent.
Okay, so I am 16, and I have incredibly bad teeth... Highschool is THE WORST place to be, because everyone is a critic, and I hate the fact that my teeth could be a reason that I don't get a girlfriend, or not have a load of friends... I picture myself as an ugly person the way I am, but most of the time I have a false happy image on. I love to laugh, and I'm a pretty funny person, but every time that I smile, I think about how "Everyone must have seen my teeth!" or what they think of me as a person... I feel like I need to do something, because it's affecting an important part of my life, and possibly the rest of it.. My question is if anyone out there can possibly lend a helping hand, just a number to a pro-bono dentistry local to my place of residence (Olympia, WA) or even a web-site, or maybe you're a dentist yourself? You never know.. I also have a twin brother with equally bad teeth, and we really need this..

well in LA, some girls like crooked teeth cuz it gives a bit of a unique look. but i dunno about suburbia, just move here homie

Dentistry is extremely expensive and most dental insurance plans don't cover real dental work. They only cover cleanings and if you are lucky, fillings.

Reply:I live in Bothell, WA (other side of seattle. so kind of far.) but you should call DSHS (dept of social and health services) they can refer you to dentists who work on a sliding scale (based on how much your parents make) and will be able to at least make it affordable for your family if you dont have any dental coverage.
otherwise you should get out the phone book and talk to some local dentist offices about it. tell them your situation and that you need a sliding scale or a pay later method. although you may get a lot of people that say "no" there will be someone who can help. if they say "no" ask them if they know of anywhere that would be good for you to call. dentists know other dentists, so they may be able to refer you to another location. dont just look in OLY... look in the outlying cities if you can get a ride from someone for your appointments.

My teeth problems is caused by my two front teeth being crooked. When I went swimming one time someone pushed me against the wall and it made them crooked.

I will be paying it off for a few years, but honestly it made such an improvement for me, I would pay much for the improvements it made.. If you know this is something you need, ask your parents if they can finance it for you.. If thats not an option, just call dentists in your area and ask them yourself.. I am sure they could lead you in the right direction... and remember.. where there is a will, there is a way!

I went through the SAME thing, I finally ended up paying for my own braces when I was 19.. I am now 23 with straight teeth..
I grew up not even wanting to look at myself when I brushed my teeth.. people were mean, and I remember hiding from cameras in fear that someone would capture my teeth on film.. I covered my mouth when I talked or laughed, I barely smiled.. it really affected my life.. I got a good dentist who allowed me to pay random payments, because she knew I couldn't afford to pay a lot of money per month.. after a LOT of work, and 3 years, I have so much confidence now it's not even funny.. you should look in the yellow pages in your phone book, or google.com and ask around for quotes, work for the summer and save your pennies, you WONT regret it .. I can guarantee it.. you'll appreciate it more if you pay for it yourself, I never held it against my parents because they couldn't afford it.

Reply:well, i have the same problem. well, not really, i have horribly crooked teeth and they aren't exactly white. its not that i don't brush them, but teeth aren't naturally white. a slight yellowish color is normal, its the color of the enamel they are made of. people with white teeth must have bleached them, people with straight teeth must have gotten braces. crooked teeth are like that for a reason, im not a dentist, so this is just my theory, but i believe that teeth align themselves to be best at chewing the kinds of foods you eat most often. i really doubt that people will judge you for what your teeth are like, you can just keep your mouth closed if thats the problem. and think about it, theres a country somewhere where everyone has horrible teeth, they are even famous for it almost. its called england, and its still a pretty interesting country. if anyone says anything, scare them. be a psycho, no one will think less of you for it, its makes you more interesting if anything, if they tease you say something like "better for ripping your jugulars out" while staring at them cross eyed and drolling a little. but if you do tat try to do it alone with them, it makes it even more fun.
and in the future, no intro is needed for yahoo answers.

Changing my major from Pharmacy?
I am a freshmen at a local college. I had the motivation to become a pharmacist. However, I am also thinking about changing to dentist or even becoming a doctor. What are the pros and cons among these?
I have done a lot of studying among these and it seems that becoming a doctor will likely get paid more where as a pharmacist makes about 90-100k (US Dollars).
This may sound like a dumb question but what is the average income for an American? I would like to live in a big home and not stress about money throughout my life and I feel if I become a pharmacist, I will stress out financially.

This is a 2 year old that the dentist is going to put her to sleep and perform the dental work at a local hospital.

these teeth will start getting replaced by permanent teeth only by the age of 6-7-8 yrs...till then, they are essential to maintain the shape of the jaw arches and act as guides for the permanent teeth to erupt. once the decay starts, it is necessary to clean the tooth as only in rare situations decay gets arrested on it`s own. the child`s nutrition might suffer if the teeth are not restored to health.
the temporary (deciduous/milk) teeth act as blueprints for the permanent teeth and maintaining their health is as vital as that of the latter.
take care of the kid`s oral hygiene...so just dont get the treatment done but get all the advice from the dentist for future precautions and any other health conditions the child might be sufferin from that is affectin the mouth as well....

Reply:Why is it that a two year old has such horrible decay in her teeth anyway? Does she have some bone disease because a normal healthy two year old shouldn't have this problem. It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion from a dentist but oral hygiene and health is vitally important to a person's overall health. I do believe that the decay should be addressed in some form, but more importantly, the reason for the decay should be addressed and taken care of to prevent health problems in the future.
Reply:Yes!!! Those decaying teeth can HURT!! My mother worked in a pediatric dentist office for years and told me so many horror stories about parents bringing in children screaming in pain because their teeth were rotting in their poor little heads. (In more than one case, the parents were angry at their kids for crying so much even though they were the ones giving the infants and toddlers Mountain Dew in a bottle every day.) I know they're just baby teeth and will fall out eventually, but you wouldn't want a two year old to hurt for years until they do. The decay can lead to infection and even affect the permenent teeth coming in behind them, anyway.

u dont want this decay to reach to more deeper levels, and prevent the infection reaching the bone, since dental decay is a sort of infection..
and in this young age, it is very sad to see such decay to b prevelant and seems the parent didnt obtain good oral hygine..so it is their duty to help make a stop of this in the first place and seek treatment for their child,and since the child is pretty young, general anesthesia is treatment of choice.. due to incooperation at such age and it is going to take some time..

Obviously she can have other drinks if she's being supervised but if she's just going to keep the bottle in her mouth for a long time then water is best. Don't be too hard on yourself, this happens to a lot of kids.

It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion from a dentist but oral hygiene and health is vitally important to a person's overall health. I do believe that the decay should be addressed in some form, but more importantly, the reason for the decay should be addressed and taken care of to prevent health problems in the future.

My mother worked in a pediatric dentist office for years and told me so many horror stories about parents bringing in children screaming in pain because their teeth were rotting in their poor little heads. (In more than one case, the parents were angry at their kids for crying so much even though they were the ones giving the infants and toddlers Mountain Dew in a bottle every day.) I know they're just baby teeth and will fall out eventually, but you wouldn't want a two year old to hurt for years until they do. The decay can lead to infection and even affect the permenent teeth coming in behind them, anyway.

Obviously she can have other drinks if she's being supervised but if she's just going to keep the bottle in her mouth for a long time then water is best. Im five months pregnant and my wisdom teeth just came through. My dentist put me on Amoxicillin and tylonol for infection and pain. He reffered me to a specialist an they said they prefer not to pull them out but can pull out the one that hurts the most on the bottom with a local anastic. I have four months left to go so I can be sadated and have them removed or I can remove one now with local and wait till after birth.Any suggestions? anybody been through this before? Please Help!

The dentist proscribed Clindamycin for her seeing she is allergic to penicillin. She called..

Kinney Drugs.. $35
Dobbins.. Local Pharmacy.. $16
Heck of a difference.. All generic..
I woke up.. OUCH.. I had a toothache.. Hurt like an SOB...
Walmart, RiteAid, Kinney.. For Orajel or simular product.. $6.99-$7.99 for Benzocaine 20%
Local J.J Newbury.. $1.00 generic.. But same active ingredient.. Benzocaine 20%.. Worked like a charm too.. Wasn't out dated or anything..

So my teeth are horrible i have only really two teeth left on the top others are broken or i have done self dentistry because i can't afford to go to the dentist even with my fear of the dentist i want to go. My self esteem is horrible i have to watch what i eat. I never smile, and i have constant headaches and tooth aches. I know my mouth is infected but i need like 10,000 in work done. 14 teeth pulled... partial plate on bottom full plate on top. Anyone have any ideas. Any Universities around you or in the next town. All Universities have dental colleges, and the students under their teachers supervision will work on your teeth and charge only a fraction of the cost of a dentist. I have never heard of them wanting a payment up front, Write the president of the dental college a letter, and explain yourself just as you have here. Also look in the yellow pages and find a free clinic near you. A Doctor there may know how to help you. All Doctors do some pro bono work, dentists too. You just have to find one. When my friend did it, he was in the same boat as you, and he actually got 3 different co-signers to help up his credit limit. Then you just charge the service like you would on a credit card, and pay it off as you are able. Dental plans are going to have an annual cap on them which will not be anywhere near what you need to get your teeth fixed, and dental discounts are almost always a scam, so don't even bother. I have seen first hand the torture of teeth gone bad, and I know what it can do to your self esteem, attitude, and health. its horrible and it's one of those things that never gets any better. Any Universities around you or in the next town. All Universities have dental colleges, and the students under their teachers supervision will work on your teeth and charge only a fraction of the cost of a dentist. I have never heard of them wanting a payment up front, Write the president of the dental college a letter, and explain yourself just as you have here. Also look in the yellow pages and find a free clinic near you. A Doctor there may know how to help you. All Doctors do some pro bono work, dentists too. You just have to find one. A broad smile revealing a mouthful of pearly whites is old school for a rising bling culture sinking its teeth into a so-called grill or front.
Individual gold-capped teeth, which have drifted in and out of fashion since the early 1970s, have given way to grills and fronts - removable mouthpieces made of gold, platinum or silver and sometimes studded with jewels.
The trend has been boosted in recent years by hip-hop icons such as Nelly and rappers like Paul Wall.
After Nelly's 2005 hit "Grillz," which glorifies the trend, young people all over scrambled to wrap their happy chops around a shiny grill.
Jacob Owens, a 17-year-old South High School student, snagged a diamond-studded silver grill a couple of months ago for $200.
"Everybody is getting grills," Owens said while hanging out at the food court at Tower City. He chose silver to set himself apart in a trend he calls a "hot new thing."
Owens sheds his grill to eat and at bedtime, but for the most part wears it for hours at a time to match his ear rings.
With a grill, chains and ear rings, he is a manifestation of bling - a term coined in the late 1990s for flashy, expen sive jewelry and other adorn ments.
Many of the mouthpieces - made from dental imprints - are purchased online. But they are sold at local outlets too, like Wired Up at Tower City.
Jeremy McGrew, manager at the Wired Up kiosk, said business has been booming since the release of "Grillz."
Generally, tooth imprints are made and sent to a jeweler who fashions the fronts and returns them to the client or retailer where the items were purchased.
Although people like Owens may find it cool to flash their fronts, the mouth jewelry has caught the attention and concern of the American Dental Association.
Matthew Messina, a Fairview Park dentist and ADA spokeman, said improper use and care of fronts can result in serious gum disease or cavities.
Owens' story confirms Messina's concern that teens are wearing their mouthpieces for long periods without cleaning them often enough.
Messina has no problem with the aesthetic aspect of a grill, but he warns of problems down the road if they are not kept clean or if they are bonded to natural teeth.
Snap-on grills do not fit particularly well in and around the teeth, he said, allowing food and bacteria to get trapped underneath, which can cause cavities or other problems like gum disease or gum recession.
Other dangers include allergic reactions to cheaper materials used to make the grills and adverse reactions to jewelry cleaners, which can burn gums, Messina said.
"The really wealthy who have them made of high-quality precious metals, you will have less allergic reaction," Messina said. "Someone going more of a cut-rate route, where they are using lesser metals, we see a lot more metal-allergic reaction to more-base metals."
Steve Michaels, who makes grills for Midwest Goldfronts in Minneapolis, said he gets clients from as far away as Cleveland and Los Angeles.
Michaels said Midwest Goldfronts does quality work and discourages customers from attaching fronts with permanent cement, which dentists say can cause tooth damage and cost more money to repair.
Messina said some vendors may be unaware that in some states - Ohio included - taking an impression of someone's mouth is considered dentistry, which requires a license.
That did not seem to concern a group of four or five teens strolling the corridors of Tower City on a recent weekday. They all smiled - revealing their bling.

Are there nonprofits or other organizations that assist diabetics to improve smiles with dental implants?
i reenrolled in college 2 years ago.i will graduate,12/08. i am diabetic, have hypertension, and am very excited about living life again. i was severly depressed for almost 17years. i have two wonderful teenage children whom i love and adore. yes i'm married to their father. life's been more than tough; by God's grace we managed to keep the family together so that the children could have some sense of normalcy. My battle scars are my teeth and loss of hair. i manage to conceal both as much as possible. i'm 48 with a new outlook on life. i feel like i've gotten a second wind. my 19 year old daughter just finished her second year at the local community college with a 4.0 GPA. Her brother is a good student presently in the 10th grade. The college scouts are looking at him already. i've seen so many makeovers with gorgeous teeth. two years ago i saw two of wash,d.c.'s greatest dentist. The cost are astronomical. i'm not mad at the dentist. i am desperate to have a great smile. thanx

You know, dental implants are often considered as the best solution, but other good and cheaper solutions exist. Explore these! For example, a well-fitted partial denture can restore a smile satisfactorily in a majority of patients.
I know that it is possible to get surgery done for "cheap" in some countries... It's common for plastic surgery and it's increasingly popular for dental treatments. People doing it put their health at risk, since the treatments are often done in countries where the standards of care are lower than in the "Western World". And even though you get somebody competent, the follow-up can be impossible if you have problems... And good luck to find a dentist in D.C. willing to work with a "butched" surgery. U.S. and Canada have among the highest standards or dental practice in the world. Don't forget it!

What does surgical extraction of a tooth involve?
I'm just back from the dentist - first appointment in ten years, but no cavities - woohoo! The only problem is with my wisdom tooth on the bottom left, it's only partially erupted and I've got "pericoronitis" which I think means an infection of the gums there.
I have to go back next week for x-rays to look at the exact position of the tooth but the dentist said it will probably need to come out sooner rather than later, and that it would be a "surgical extraction" because of the position and angle of the tooth. I thought he meant it would be done under general anaesthesia, but he says it's still under local, but it's far more complicated than normal extractions.
So what exactly does it involve?

I beleive it measn that instead of the dentist playing "tug of war" with the tooth to pull it out as they do with a normal extraction, he will need to cut the gum to get access to the whole tooth so he can get it out. He will also probably have to stitch where the tooth was when he has got it out. As he is happy to do it himself under a local he's happy it's no major job and althogh you will be a sore afterwise,just keep taking the painkillers and you will be fine- nuch better that risking the complications of an abess that may develop if you dont have it done.
and dont worry, you really wont feel a thing while he is doing it - dont let him start if you still have even the slightest feeling- i'm sure he wont mind only you can say how effective the anastetic is lol

It didn't really hurt, it was just a lot of perssure at times. It does hurt a lot once the numbness wears off! Also, the painkillers they prescibed me made me feel like I was going to throw up, so didn't eat anything for 2 days except some apple sauce.
Reply:It's usually not a big deal. I went back and had 3 wisdom teeth removed at one time. My 4th was stubborn and didn't come out right away. Just make sure you follow the doctors orders with what he wants you to do. I had to eat dinner early the night before, and not eat anything after that. I could only drink water. To be very honest, here's something to think about.. if you know exactly what happens, will that make you worry more, or will it comfort you?

If you came in for an appointment 10 years later with no cavities, it sounds like your overall mouth health is pretty awesome and it should be no big deal.

Then, your dentist will have to make a small incision in the area to expose the rest of the tooth. Lastly, depending on the position of the tooth, he'll remove it with forceps or may have to section the tooth out.
Reply:If one near, you'll go to a dental hospital.
You'll get about 5-7 injections in your mouth to sedate it. One will also go into your pallet, just so you know.
Then they cout open the gum where necessary and remove the wisdom tooth by extracting it by plyers. Usually they dont stitch it.
Your mouth will be sore for at least 4 days in which its also basicly not possible to eat solid things.
You should get sachets of painkillers, seeing taking tablets is out of the question and the advice to rince your mouth with some salted water to keep infection away from the wound.

Seeing that you are an adult and only part of ur third molar is erupted ,this means that it is impacted. I only depends on how close the root is to the nerve. If you have health insurrance some of them cover wissie extractions. If you do you might want to consider gettin them all out under sedation. If you are gonna do only the 1 and you are anxious enquire as to whether you could get some oral sedation. Maximum swelling 2-3 days post-op. Soft diet for 1 week.

Can a nightguard cause choking?
I've been suffering from headaches and facial pain for so long. Finally, my doctor and dentist realized that I clench and grind my teeth, and that's what causing the pain. The dentist prescribed a nightguard, but I have to wait til next month for a custom made guard. I purchased one at the local drugstore, molded it to my teeth, yet I am scared that if I wear it at night it will fall backwards and block my throat. I know it sounds silly, but can I choke/suffocate from the nightguard? Please let me know.

I went to the dentist today for a checkup/cleaning and he did xrays and told me that I had a lot of cavities that needed to be filled... It was my first time at the dentist in 3 years... First of all I'm so embarassed by this because I feel like a hill billy or something who doesn't even know what a tooth brush is.
I was kind of shocked by the amount of teeth that he told me needed work done on them... 7 total!! :( I brush my teeth like 3 times a day too!! ANYWAYS,
I'm realllly nervous and scared about all of this because I had a cavity filled once before and it hurt a lot. He said he was going to use local anesthetics so I'll be awake for the whole thing and I don't know if I can deal with that. He said it will take 2 1/2 hours!! Is there anything I can take before to calm me down/make me kind of sleepy??! I'll really take anything... cost doesn't matter.... suggestions please!! thank you!!

See if theres a dentist that specializes in people that need lots of work done but are nervous. They actually have a pill that will "put you to sleep". Not all dentists do this though. Its called "sedation dentistry" in many instances, although the names change for marketing.
After your done, the only thing that they'll usually prescribe is ibuprofen, because it works.

Anyway, be sure that you do take something because it is true that fillings hurt. If you are getting seven done in one day then that may be tough for you. I had three done at two different appointments to replace old silver fillings from childhood. It was not very fun at all! and I took lots of medicine when I got home. The local anesthesia does help to numb you up pretty well though during the procedure. By the way check your diet to see why you have so many cavities and also see if you have GERD like myself! That was the cause of my dental issues! May God be with you!
Reply:Ok silly as this seems it works take a tea bag cut the string off and dampen the bag where it is fairly moist. Place in your mouth where the pain is and bingo 20 minutes and the pain is gone.
Garlic works well to try chewing garlic flavored crutons.
Reply:you shouldnt be embarrassed. it happens. they numb you down so the only thing you will feel is the syringe they use to inject the novocaine. after that you will hear feel some tools that they use and the sounds they make but you wont feel any pain. then when they finish drillin and fillin you will go home, the next day you wont feel any type of pain and you will go on with your life. if you do feel pain then take some advil

Most GOOD dentist understand people's fears of going to the dentist. If he doesn't try to help you or offer positive suggestions, I would seriously consider going to someone else.
I recently had broken tooth that needed repair and as he was filing my tooth he bumped my lip and it started bleeding all in my mouth. He acted like nothing happened and I just swallowed my blood. Then I cancelled my follow up visit with him, and we are currently looking for another dentist!
I don't think 2 Advil are going to calm your nerves.....you should ask him to gas you or give you an iv that will calm your nerves!

The injection sites will be the only place you'll feel uncomfortable for awhile, but if that bothers you, you can always take some Tylonol or Advil before your dental treatment.
Avoid taking Asprin because it could cause bleeding, which could make it difficult for the dentist to work on some areas.
Reply:Restoration is as easy as 123, the feeling of sensitivity can be lessen by using water during drilling. But too sensitive patient can be given a local anesthesia which is sufficient enough to lessen the sensitivity. Relax and think of your teeth instead of bothering you with the procedure.
Reply:Take some ibuprofen before hand for the pain. If you want to make yourself sleepy, take 1-2 benadryl.
Reply:I totally understand what you're going through. When you go to the dentist, tell him to make sure you're very numb. Fillings are the easiest thing to go through-dentalwise. I am the biggest dental coward (I waited 8 years to go) and I just had two root canals and I was fine. I told the doctor to make sure I was really numb and the toughest part was just keeping my mouth open for 45 minutes (each root canal). I was shaky and nervous the whole time, but before I knew it I was finished and on my way. I was even able to drive myself back to work afterwards. If you're worried about having to be there for 2 1/2 hours, ask if he can do half of them first and the others during another visit. And don't worry about the number of cavities you have. Most people end up having A LOT of cavities. My first dentist visit, I had 7 and my friend had 11. Sometimes food gets in between your teeth and you don't even know it, and that can cause a lot of cavities. But you really don't need anything before you go if you're only going for fillings. If you're uncomfortable with the dentist, then I would ask around to see who everyone else goes to. I know you'll be fine! If I can survive through TWO rootcanals, I know you can live through some fillings. Good luck!! :)

Does anyone know if it is normal for my nose to get blood/blood clots in it after I get a tooth pulled?
I had my tooth pulled 6 days ago and every day since my nostrel on the side the tooth was pulled fills up with blood and kinda clots and it just gets stuffed up but with blood and my dentist told me it is ok and to just not blow it for a couple of weeks but I can wipe it! I'm just really curious if anyone knows anything about this so I can sleep at night! I can wipe a kleenex across the bottom of my nose and get red blood on the kleenex every wipe and it's starting to worry me. I've even called the local hospital and talked to a doctor and they said its probly normal since I had an upper tooth pulled(It was not a wisdom tooth)! The doc also said your dentist is right don't blow it! So if anyone can help me or has a story like this that has helping info. I would greatly appreciate it, Thank you!

If you have half a brain (which many don't) you can learn the basics at the school and use your other talents while at work (one of my main assistants is trade school educated, but has a great sense of schedule flow. You'll find some dentists not interested in that, but many that appreciate a dental assistant that can anticipate situations. (a learned skill). Don't knock home schooling (which you didn't) I'm homeschooling my 14 year old all while working.... you can go far!!

I live in Virginia and most often Dental Assistants do go to the Vocational Schools in order to become certified.
I have been a Dental Assistant for 24 years and did not go to a Dental Assisting program, instead I did on the job training through a high school program.
However, over the years, I have attended College Courses related to my field, often times paid for by my employers.
In Virginia, it's not necessary to have a certificate from an accredited school to work as a Dental Assistant.
It's also not required to be a Certified or Registered Dental Assistant here.
X-ray Certification is most definitely required.
I do believe however, that an acredited dental assisting program will give you the best chances of being fully prepared to work in the field and be successful in your desired career.
Consider interviewing some local Dentists and their Assistants to get a better idea of the best course of action.
Some Doctors are very willing to train a person with true desire and interest in their own offices.
If you find that you really enjoy Dentistry and Dental Assisting, you might want to consider Dental Hygiene.
You would need to go to college and get a Degree but the pay is significantly higher than for a Dental Assistant.

Reply:This could depend on where you live. In some areas you can be trained in the dental office to be an assistant. I believe in most areas you will still have to get an x-ray certification. This is a short course on taking x-rays. Could be as little as two days, with a written exam and a practical exam. Other courses are available. If you live near a large city there should be a school that offers a dental assisting certification. A certificate in dental assisting usually takes between 6-12 months. These schools usually offer financial aid and some offer job placement assistance. But don't guarantee a job. Having at least a GED should get you accepted into the school
Dentists are looking for outgoing, well groomed, self starter people that are good at multitasking, working independantly, and working under pressure. You have very good people skills, and have a very good work ethic. If the dentist cannot count on you to be at work you will not have a job for very long. They are depending on you to be there EVERYDAY. Go to a local dental office and let them know you are interested in being a dental assistant, and ask if you could observe for 2-3 hours on another day. Alot of offices wouldn't have a problem with that as long as you are a neatly grommed and a clean person. I.e. dress the part.

I live in Virginia and most often Dental Assistants do go to the Vocational Schools in order to become certified.
I have been a Dental Assistant for 24 years and did not go to a Dental Assisting program, instead I did on the job training through a high school program.
However, over the years, I have attended College Courses related to my field, often times paid for by my employers.
In Virginia, it's not necessary to have a certificate from an accredited school to work as a Dental Assistant.
It's also not required to be a Certified or Registered Dental Assistant here.
X-ray Certification is most definitely required.
I do believe however, that an acredited dental assisting program will give you the best chances of being fully prepared to work in the field and be successful in your desired career.
Consider interviewing some local Dentists and their Assistants to get a better idea of the best course of action.
Some Doctors are very willing to train a person with true desire and interest in their own offices.
If you find that you really enjoy Dentistry and Dental Assisting, you might want to consider Dental Hygiene.
You would need to go to college and get a Degree but the pay is significantly higher than for a Dental Assistant.

Reply:This could depend on where you live. In some areas you can be trained in the dental office to be an assistant. I believe in most areas you will still have to get an x-ray certification. This is a short course on taking x-rays. Could be as little as two days, with a written exam and a practical exam. Other courses are available. If you live near a large city there should be a school that offers a dental assisting certification. A certificate in dental assisting usually takes between 6-12 months. These schools usually offer financial aid and some offer job placement assistance. But don't guarantee a job. Having at least a GED should get you accepted into the school
Dentists are looking for outgoing, well groomed, self starter people that are good at multitasking, working independantly, and working under pressure. You have very good people skills, and have a very good work ethic. If the dentist cannot count on you to be at work you will not have a job for very long. They are depending on you to be there EVERYDAY. Go to a local dental office and let them know you are interested in being a dental assistant, and ask if you could observe for 2-3 hours on another day. Alot of offices wouldn't have a problem with that as long as you are a neatly grommed and a clean person. I.e. dress the part.

Is it malpractice to continue with a medical procedure even though a patient's blood pressure is 190/97?
My mother was extremely nervous during her procedure to get all of her teeth pulled. She read 190/97 before the procedure. and they said that was high, so they waited 5 or 10 minutes, it read the same, but they went on with it even after it didn't go down. I am not sure what is considered too high to do a procedure like that. On top of that, she got ALL of her teeth pulled with only local anesthesia, and she claims she felt every bit of it, her heart was racing way faster and she was scared absolutely to death throughout the entire thing. So her BP was probably sky high but they went on with it. She is scared to go back to that dentist because he has been very mean and unprofessional with her throughout the whole process. But do we have a good reason to ask for her money back so she can afford go to a better dentist? THANK YOU SO MUCH!

The dentist may have spoke with her doctor and the doctor would have to confirm that there is no history of high BP. If you Mom was nervous than that could definately elevate her BP.
I don't know how you could get your money back for a proceducer that very clearly has already been performed... I guess your Mom should have founda good dentist before such a major procedure.

They usually have the patient sign a contract before the procedure where she agreed to the risks and to the form of anesteshia used, and it will be legally binding. Unless she told them to stop, then she was agreeing to the procedures being performed. Since she did not ask them to stop, or get up and leave when her blood pressure was high, then she is classed as a consenting, willing participent. Its not like they had her tied to the chair and drugged where she couldn't say no, so the law will not support her claim. Her best bet is to just finish using the same dentist. You should be able to attend the appointments with her if that would help her relax during them.

If she had stroked out in the chair, you would certainly have a basis for a suit. Being mean is not grounds for a malpractice suit. File a complaint with the local dental society. He did pull her teeth, which is what he was paid for, so you will probably have to pay him. Just don't go back to him.

General anesthesia in children for dental work?
My son is going on 6 years old. After a visit to the pediatric dentist today we discovered that he has several cavities and an abcessed tooth. The dentist also wants to put caps on the rest of his molars to protect them. He said we could do the laughing gas %26amp; a local and split the procedures in to 2 visits but he would prefer we use a general anesthetic and do everything at once. I am so scared to have my little boy put under, I am a very emotional person and this is very hard for me to consider. Does anyone have any input on this subject?

It's a long process, and kids in general cant sit still long enough like an adult can.
Your Dentist prefers the General, for many reasons. 1) The child will be put under and he can work without interruptions. 2) It cuts down on visits (again, most children dont enjoy coming to see us multi times, which your child will have to). And 3) He's thinking of your child, and his comfort. Doing it all at once, is less stress on a child. And less trauma, for the child. He wont feel any discomfort, from sitting in a chair with his mouth open for however long he has too, which can be very time consuming with multi procedures like his (your child).
*Trust your Dentist, he wouldnt do you wrong! He's only looking out for your child, the best way he knows how.
Reply:My dentist said she is perfectly secure having her son (I think he's around 4-5) going under Twilight Sleep. You're not fully under, just kind of asleep. You become more relaxed where you may think you're sleeping (Twilight Sleep) but actually don't remember being awake. I had this done and it's great.
The first stage is the laughing gas stage, next is Twilight Sleep, and the deeper stage is general anesthesia.

We give the kids liquid Versed beforehand, put them out with gas, start an IV, and put in the breathing tube. It seems to be a very good technique.

Invisalign tooth alignment... any good?
Has anyone had invisalign braces? I'm 24 and my teeth have started to push forward causing the front ones to start to push backwards. My dentist suggested traditional braces but I've just read about invasalign that a few local orthodontists can fit.
Has anyone tried them and how much did it cost?

If you have a severe case of over crowded teeth invisalign would not be suitable. They are about £4,000 for upper and lower arch, very similar price to traditional braces. There is also the option of lingual braces now, which are brackets on the back side of the teeth and therefore not visible.

I was 25 when I first had them and did not want the "metal mouth" (LOL) at my age and the invasalign was perfect. I would highly recommend them.

Did you have to have all of your good teeth pulled to get the dentures? If you did, did the dentist actually put you out under anesthetic, or was it done with just a local novocain shot?

In order to get "dentures" you have to have all of your teeth removed. Dentures replace all of your teeth.
If you still have teeth that are in good condition, then you will be able to keep those teeth and you will get what is called a "partial denture". This will allow you to replace the bad/missing teeth while maintaining your good teeth.
Now, if your scared of getting your teeth pulled the dentist can take the impressions, get your dentures made, and send you and your dentures to an oral surgeon to have your teeth pulled. This will add an additional cost to your procedure, although some people feel that this is well worth the cost!
You can have your teeth pulled wait several weeks and then have your dentures made. The good thing....your dentures will fit pretty good with some minor adjustments the day of delivery. The bad thing....you will be without teeth for several weeks.
If your dentures are put in the same day you have your teeth pulled (aka: immediate dentures) there will be a lot of visits to your dentist to keep them fitting and then the cost of a permanent liner when your gums have finished healing.

Dental Malpractice?
I am just writing this to see people's reactions and to find out if it's worth taking action to do something about it.
My mom went to a dentist, Dr.S, for a check up because she has gum desease. I was in the room when the doctor was doing the check up. The doctor wasn't really paying attention to what she was doing and it seemed that she spent more time chatting and joking with her assistant than doing what she was supposed to do. After the appointment my mom was feeling okay. But a few hours after the appointment one side of her mouth started to hurt her. During the night she couldn't get any sleep because of the pain. And the next day that side of her mouth, her gums, were swollen and hurt her even worse. She called her usual dentist, Dr. G, to make an emergency appointment. The doctor confirmed that she indeed had an infection and would need to take antibiotics.
We realized that we may have a case so we went back to the office office of Dr.S in order to get her to confirm that my mom had an infection. She wasnt there so my mom got an appointment with the boss of Dr.S. The boss of Dr.S confirmed the infection. He also had to do a minor surgery to make the infection site better which required a local anesthesia.
Two days after the appointment to Dr.S the infection site turned a dark color and my mom is still expierencing pain.
So far we have paid for three medications and three appointments.
We were wondering if we have enough for a dental malpractice case. Is it worth it for us to do anything about this?

Reply:Honestly, your mom probably doesn't have the proof to prove the dentist was chatting it up-but still may get negligence. It doesn't hurt to call a laywer and get a consultation, but your mom would have to be willing to go through A LOT to go ahead and pursue this. If she is willing to go through with it, AND she finds a lawyer that feels they will take her on, I say it can't hurt. But, in the future, your mom should not allow such conduct. I know it is hard to say anything, but when it comes to her health and well being, she should place herself at top.

Help! wisdom tooth?
hi, yesterday I went to the dentist cuz my molars hurt. dentist said i have a wisdom tooth (it's on the bottom of my mouth). my surgery will be on the 27th cuz it's infected and dr presecribed me pain killers n something for the infection. I'm very nervous cuz i've heard many ppl say that having wisdom tooth pulled is very painful and dr said surgery wont be easy cuz the tooth is in a horizontal position n they'd need to break the tooth. is it ok to have only local anesthetic or general would be better?
all answers are welcome about wisdom tooth.

that happened to me too. i got my bottom two extracted yesterday and they are also in a horizontal position. i wasn't put under anesthetics. He just numbed the area ALOT.
but anyways ...
i would say anesthetics would be better. you won't feel a thing, you'll just feel as if youre under a deep sleep haha. make sure after you wake up, you take your meds becaues the pain after would be crazyyyy.

And for the pain and swelling, you will be given appropriate medicines. And while are getting it removed, it will not hurt you because that area will be totally numb. So, where is the reason for getting any nervous.

My first Pregnancy. I'm 6 wks & 3 days pregnant. Pls need your help!!!?
I'm supposed to go see a dentist for a root canal, but I got pregnant. I know, I should have done it sooner. I started having pain on my tooth last night. I was hoping to hold the pain till three mths. But I could not take the pain. So, I called my OB nurse three times to asked question if it safe for me to get a root canal? They told it's safe. I did went to see a dentist and got my root canal done. They did one x-ray on me and they cover me w/ two protection. They did put local anesthetics maybe four or five times. It was so painful. I told them to take one only but I guess they decided to take another one till my face was numb. My concern is I hope it didn't affect the baby. Right now, I'm in my first trimester, when most of the fetal organs are developing. I'm really scared. Has anyone gone through this and gave birth with a healthy baby? I know I've asked a nurse but sometime you still get paranoid. I'm not taking tylenol or penclln at all. My first appt is 8/24/07. Wish me luck!

Reply:As scary as it is, keep in mind many women at 6 weeks don't even know they are pregnant and go through un-protected xrays and full blown pain killers and antibiotics and still deliver perfectly healthy babies. It sounds like you are doing everything you can to protect your baby. You are doing fine, don't worry.
Reply:they pain reliver that they used is localized which means that it wont travel in ur boby it stays right where they put it and they double protected u so u are ok with that as well if u are still really worried talk to ur ob-gyn and tell him/her they will discuse ur fears and they may even have some information that u can take with u to read hope this help oh and u can take tylenol but u cant take advil
Reply:You don't need to 'worry' about your baby being 'deformed' ... the 'anaesthetic' used was 'local' and won't 'affect' your fetus, and they used 'two' lead aprons when they did the x-rays, so you're fine there. I had a car accident when i was first pregnant and had 'whiplash' and had to be x-rayed and given 'local anaesthetic' to help 'ease' the pain ... my baby was 'fine' but I had an 'insurance rider' from the person whose car hit mine that didn't come 'off' until my son had his first child ... when she was 'normal' they finally could take the 'rider' off ... if there was ANYTHING WRONG it would have 'come out' in my first grandchild even though my SON was 'completely normal' ... and this is some 32+ years later, and they 'know more now than they did back then,' so you are 'totally safe' as far as your baby is concerned. I do hope you take some 'Tylenol' or even a 'prescription' for 'pain relief' though ... too much 'pain' CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS when you are pregnant.

Plus your dentist would not take the chance either. Take care, stress will do more harm to your pregnancy, so chill.
Reply:I had a root canal in my second trimester after much consultation between my midwife and my dentis.. they decided it would be best to do the procedure, rather than ris infection..
I now have a PERFECTLY HEALTHY 4 YEAR OLD LITTLE MAN!!

Dental anaesthesia?
Have just lost big filling but know this time it'll need a crown.
I never have a local anaesthetic for fillings - just grin and bear it - but has anyone done the same thing when having a crown?
Last time I had a jab was 15 years ago to have a tooth out - and I've managed to do without ever since. For me the injection is the worst part of any treatment. My dentist is excellent - but i know he doesn't use any gel before giving injections. I'd also like to know how I can find out which dentists in my area (North West England) use "the lance" which I gather makes the treatment much less unpleasant.
I'd pay for private treatment if I knew one who did. No I'm not a coward - just had so many jabs when I was younger - it put me right off!

I'm totally with you on this one my friend, I'm a registered dental nurse and am terrified of needles, not just in the mouth but anywhere on the body.
If and when i need any treatment i go with out the dreaded jab, i personally thinks it's mind over matter, i dont mind and it dont matter!
Your dentist may have to give you a small jab whilst preparing the tooth for a crown as when he/she drills the tooth, the drill may come into contact with the gum line and this can feel uncomfortable.
Trying looking on the net to find out what techniques your local dentist use in terms of dental treatment.

Although I live in Wales, I actually travelled to the heart of London as I was recommended to a marvellous dentist who uses the wand for injections, but still uses numbing gel before that. Even so, because I am so terrified and didn't want to know or feel at all what was going on, gas and air was not good enough so I went for IV sedation. Completely out, no problems at all and though I have a needle phobia as well, with numbing gel on my arm first, I didn't feel a thing. Perhaps this sort of thing would suit you. Expensive but well worth it.

Reply:Have anaesthetic every time i go to the dentist, last time i was there, on the chair, for 4 hrs... I hate it but put up with it so that my teeth look good at the end of it. So yes, had that million times! Doesnt scare me, its annoying only. I feel no pain anymore!
