I will be going in for an operation soon, not life threatening or anything but enough to need me to go under an anesthetic.I'm really worried about this though,in the past both local and general anesthetics have worn off or failed completely and i've had to have teeth removed and stitches done while fully alert to the feelings, these are not pleasant memories.
The stiches were in a very deep wound and it took seven jabs with a local anesthetic before they gave up and I told them to just do it without. The dentist's one worked but wore off about halfway through. The general anesthetic wore off just before they finished closing up the wound,I could feel it through a sort of haze,if i'd been fully awake I probably would have screamed the building down, and it was a high dose to begin with.
I'm just terrified,it'll wear off and i'll come round in the middle of the OP,especially after seeing several stories of people waking up and being unable to signal it.
Why would this happen?
Is there anything I or a doctor can do to prevent it?
Anesthetic doesn't work?
Make sure you share these concerns with your anethesiologist during your pre-op. They can adjust the amount of medicine they give you thru out the procedure to keep you asleep.
Reply:Hi. I really wouldnt wait until pre op. Speak with your surgeon beforehand. Some people are not responsive to anethetics; let him know how afraid you are. if you wait until just before he may blow you off. Good luck.
Reply:Are you already taking high dose pain medications? Sometimes this will affect the anesthetic (especially if you don't tell them what you're taking).
Good luck
