Having all "4" Wisdom Teeth Pulled?

I am having all four of wisdom teeth pulled on Monday, after Thanksgiving. They told me they are not going to sedate me, they are going to give me a local anesthic. I hate the dentist - especially watching all metal gadgets being put in my mouth. I also absolutely hate the feeling of the needle being put in my mouth and the pressure of the medication. I was told by another dentist when I was younger that they would have to be taken out by an oral surgeon and I would have to be put out. I am worried about the pain, and I take care of my 4 year old - and my husband has no time off of work. And, I am also a smoker - so how long after is it safe to smoke? I get really, oh lets say, "mean" when I don't have them. I read 24 hours on WebMD and other places say 1 week? Any help would be appreciated.

Having all "4" Wisdom Teeth Pulled?
I had to go to an oral surgeon to have my wisdom teeth out and he required someone to go with me to drive me home. His name is Dr. Payne Hardison from Tennessee. I would recommend him to anyone even if his name is Dr. Payne! They gave me some medicine in an IV and I was out like a light. I don't really remember anything for the next five or six hours. If I were you, I would definitely take someone with me just in case something happens.

After I got home, I had gauze in my mouth. I had to take the gauze out and put in wet tea bags to help the bleeding. It was about three days before I felt comfortable eating anything. I am not a smoker but I would try to do without them as ling as possible. I would be afraid that it could cause something like a dry socket.

I hope everything goes well with you. At least you get them out after Thanksgiving!
Reply:Your better off with sedation and going to the oral surgeon because with just local it will hurt real bad trust me. I had one wisdom taken out without sedation .all other 3 was done with sedation. With sedation you dont even realize what is going on. If you are sedated it's almost like twlight you will not know anything or remember nothing about the procedure.
Reply:All I can say to you is that don't take the 4 of them a the same time.. you won't be able to eat or sleep for at least 3 nights even with antibiotics... if you have a child I recommend you pull out only 2 at the time top/bottom not the tops ones cause it will be hard... I pulled out the two in the bottom and I was dying... and because you smoke and will be in pain you will get desperate to smoke..

Good Luck!!
Reply:Smoking!!?? Oh wow, 2 words "Dry Socket." A.K.A Pain ...also hurt. Anytime you have extractions you Never should preform a sucking motion with you mouth. Why?..Because the scabs (blood clots) trying to form over your extraction site is disturbed every time you suck on that cancer stick. If you have to smoke wait ideally 72 hours, before your next cancer causing infusion. Okay I'll get off my soap box about Cancer.
Reply:I had the same thing done -- all 4 teeth out. When they say they sedate you is that they give you a little shot, which feels like someone pinching your arm for a second. Then they tell you to count backwards from 20. If you can get past 16, i'll be impressed! It happens real nice and fast. I did not chose to be awake for it and I think that's the sissy way, but it's the best way ; ) ... Then you will find yourself waking up with a lot of cotton in your mouth and feel drowsy. I remember my jaw was sore for 2 or 3 days and you take aspirins, but overall it was no big deal. Then you go home. No big deal at all. ... You won't even want to smoke for the rest of the day. I think I smoked the next day. I can't remember really. I remember just having a lot of chocolate shakes ... yummy!
Reply:Don't worry, I just had two of my wisdom teeth taken out this past tuesday, and I don't feel any pain at all. Of course, I was one of the lucky people whose wisdom teeth didn't stay below the gum line, so it was easily done in, I'd say less than 30 minutes, considering the fact that I had to take out 3 other teeth, for braces. But you won't feel much pain, the worst pain you will ever feel, is when the local anesthesia is put into your mouth, after the anesthesia ran it's course throughout the day, I did feel pain, but it didn't bother me at all. The smoking part will be talked with the assisting nurse or oral surgeon, but for your health and your 4 year old, I'd quit.
Reply:When I had my wisdom teeth removed they gave me a shot in the arm and ask me to count to 100. I don't remember what number I got to. I would go some where they knock you out. Maybe this generation has change. I don't understand it. If you can't get someone to knock you out then I would suggest to be brave and close your eyes. The shot won't last for ever, and as for smoking , I would wait about a week. Something else,I think before you surgery they give you medication so you won't me so afraid You'll be fine. Take care.
Reply:I just had all my top teeth pulled. I feel the same way as you about dentists, me personally.... not with out sedation. You`ll never know what happened. I know your not supposed to but I smoked as soon as I got out of the office and had no problems. It was hard though with no feeling. LOL
Reply:Well, first of all, try to reschedule your appointment and make it an oral surgeon, because 99% of them WILL put you to sleep from what I've seen. They put an IV in your arm or hand... and that's all the pain before the Novocaine wears out after the surgery.

Anyway, you will NOT feel like doing anything at all the first 24 hours after surgery. If your 4 year old can do simple things like get you a glass of water and operate a microwave, it would be ideal. The next few days you can resume most of your everyday life. The pain meds may wreak havoc with your sleep schedule, though; you may go to bed at 5 in the evening at times.

Now as far as smoking goes, my oral surgeon said not to use straws for the week after surgery... so I'm guessing the same goes for cigarettes, since you suck on them as well (I don't know, I'm too young to smoke.) Trust me, the pain meds will make you more relaxed. If you really need nicotine, get a sample pack of patches or a pill of some sort that will last you out. Dry socket is a miserable thing to have according to all I know that have had it.

Good luck!

(Oh, and if you can't get it rescheduled, eat a big, hot meal if possible before the surgery and listen to calming music. I've discovered that most dentists don't mind if you fall asleep during a procedure, which is a pleasant way to have something done.)
