Getting a tooth pulled on friday - Getting a Bone Graft too.. I'm nervous - What should I expect?

I have a broken tooth that's broken so far down that my dentist says it needs to be pulled. I'm horrified of dentists and even more horrified of this minor procedure.

What should I expect? Will local anesthesia be enough?

What about the bone graft? is this even necessary?

Are there complications?!

Any help will be soooo appreciated!!

I'm having an emergency extraction tomorrow, so, I literally feel your pain (if you read my last question, you'll see why I have to get it extracted).

I've had a tooth extracted before, and went to a really bad dentist. I'm horrified of dentists to begin with, but that just made it that much worse.

If you're seeing a dentist that you know and trust, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You're not going to feel pain. You will feel a LOT of pressure, but it shouldn't hurt. If it feels like they are going to dislocate your jaw, ask for a bite plug. Depending on what tooth it is, it could take anywhere between five and forty five minutes.

Truthfully, it's not that bad. It'll be sore afterward, though. An extraction is NOT a minor procedure. It's scary as hell. Don't smoke or drink through a straw for a couple of days, or you'll end up with a dry socket. That hurts worse than any pain you'll ever have.

I'm not sure about the bone graft. You may want to ask why they're insistant on doing it. Sometimes, if you have good insurance, extra procedures will get added in there that you may not need.

Try not to be scared. It shouldn't hurt during the procedure. If your heart rate is up, all it will do is make you bleed more.

I'll tell you how mine turns out.

**Edit**

Side effects of the medication is VERY rare. If you're young and healthy, you run a miniscule risk of those side effects. Try not to worry, okay?
Reply:dont worry the novicaine and nitrous should take care of ya
Reply:it will hurt for awhile afterward but it will be better after it's gone. yes the local dude will be enought. it will hurt after you get feeling back in your face. i don't know about the bone graph. try going to a medical site or getting a medical dictionary. type in what they are doing to you or what's wrong with you and you'll find somthing.

luck from a fellow dentist hater
Reply:Ask your dentist to show you the xray and explain why you need a bone graft. A good dentist will do that. The only reason you would need a bone graft is because you have had some bone loss in your jaw bone where the tooth was. He should be able to show you the bone loss on an xray and how much loss has occured. If you have doubts, get a second opinion. Bone graft is not a big deal but can cost alot. $400-$600 in addition to the extraction. I hope this helps. I have done the procedure many times on patients.
Reply:A BONE GRAFT IS ONLY NECESSARY IN A VISIBLE ZONE LIKE IN THE FRONT OF THE MOUTH WHERE A FUTURE RESTORATION IS PLANNED. IF PLACING THIS ONLY INVOLVES PLACING A MATRIX INTO THE SOCKET THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE PROCEDURE. A LOCAL ANESTHETIC WILL BE SUFFICIENT.
