Can a nightguard cause choking?

I've been suffering from headaches and facial pain for so long. Finally, my doctor and dentist realized that I clench and grind my teeth, and that's what causing the pain. The dentist prescribed a nightguard, but I have to wait til next month for a custom made guard. I purchased one at the local drugstore, molded it to my teeth, yet I am scared that if I wear it at night it will fall backwards and block my throat. I know it sounds silly, but can I choke/suffocate from the nightguard? Please let me know.

I've used one for at least 15 years, after braces... you will indeed want a custom one, and of course they ain't cheap. I have tried the ones you buy in the drug store.... unsatisfactory, and doesn't fit correctly. No, you won't choke, you just won't sleep. Ask him to hurry -- you'll love it. I work at home as a sculptor, and wear it when I'm in my studio --- I get so involved, I don't realize that I'm grinding. ...... between braces, and cosmetic dentistry, there is $20,00 in my mouth. Even wear it when I drive long distances, or watching tv. But like I said, the custom one is great....

Good luck, hon.

Reply:go to your dentist and have them make one specifically for you. Dentist made ones should mold to your teeth exactly and stay in place (wont fall off)
Reply:I guess some people can but I dont know if its by age or not, Because i took my kid to the dentist and they said that kids can choke from night guards, NOT to give him one....But thats for kids, adults i dunno,,,,,,sorry
Reply:Go to web md to find out!
Reply:I wear one on occasion for the same reason. I've never choked on it. It's more likely that you will spit it out in the middle of the night like I do and have to look under the bed for it in the morning. Sleep with it, it works!
Reply:i wear one that I got from the store and i don't worry about it. if it's fitted right then it shouldn't move like that anyway. I also learned a really good tip: Use denture cleaner, the kind you drop in a class of water to clean it.
