Can dentists use cocaine as local anesthetic legally in the US or anywhere in the world?

It used to be used in the front part of the nose to numb the front teeth. It went out of favour because of the addictive potential, and you had to keep it in a secure area with a drug register. It was really a very limited use and disappeared once lidocaine appeared.

I read an journal article recently that it is being suggested again for similar application - think it might be connected with implant surgery(?).

yes, but most use lidocaine
Reply:The ER uses it for nosebleeds! It decreases the blood flow in the nose by shrinking the vessels. It also numbs it.
Reply:no, only doctors doing surgury on a deviated septum used cocaine based products, dentists use novocaine.
Reply:Ah....doubtful

Perhaps in Columbia....they have a bit more acceptance of the drug...

You're probably aware that Novacaine does come from the coca base.....so, in way they already use cocaine...just in purer form.
Reply:Not in the U.S.A.! That is a for sure! That would be crazy! Where did you come up with that question?
