Does local anesthesia pose a threat to my unborn child?

I just found out I'm pregnant. A couple weeks ago I had a tooth pulled and the dentist gave me the numbing shots. My uncle said that it could hurt the baby. Does anyone know about that?

Does local anesthesia pose a threat to my unborn child?
They most likely gave you Xylocaine, which is similar to lidocaine. Lidocaine is what they sometimes give you if you are going to have an episiotomy during the birth. The odds are good that the medication you were given for dental work was just fine.

If you are truely concerned, call your dentist and find out what they gave you and let them know that you found out after the fact that you were PG and want to know about any potential effect on baby.

BTW.....I have had dental work done during 2 of my three pregnancies (babies #1 and #3). One pregnancy I had 2 wisdom teeth extracted and on the other I had a root canal. Both with local anesthesia. Both babies were fine. With my 2nd pregnancy I was in a car wreck and had to have local anesthesia to have stitches in my lip. No problems with that either.
Reply:It should be OK....it was just Novocaine, right? He didn't put you completely "under"?
Reply:No it won't hurt tha baby...its only a problem if you do it a lot...just mention it to your Dr on your next visit.
Reply:Novocaine or lidocaine used in dental procedures will not harm a fetus. That is why they are called "local" anesthesia. Stay away from the gas though, as it can cross the placental barrier.
Reply:Not at all. Unless they actually pushed the anesthesia through your blood and digestive system, then you are fine. My friend even had her gall bladder removed about a week before she found out that she was pregnant... her son is perfect.

I still suggest you speak with your medical professional about any concerns you have about it.
Reply:No, it won't hurt the baby. I had several dental shots during my pregnancy %26amp; my baby is perfectly healthy. Watch out for the x-rays though. I had some done while I was pregnant, but they put double x-ray vests on me.
Reply:if it hasn't hurt the baby yet it won't hurt the baby. when i was pregnant they wanted to fill a cavity i had and use novaciane but i never had it done. lol. lots of people do crazy things before they find out they are pregnant, like get drunk and take ibuprofin and wrestle and have x-rays done. most doctors will agree if it was going to harm the baby it would have, but if it hasn't don't worry about it. just don't do it again.
Reply:If it was just a local, you and your baby will be fine. I had dental work done when I was pregnant. My daughters had dental work done when they were pregnant. I have lots of friends who have also had work done when they were pregnant.

If you are still not sure, you can always call your obgyn.
Reply:Even if it could in large amounts, this one time with a little tiny syringe (I know it doesn't seem like it) won't do a thing. If there's any problems with the baby in the future, rest assured it's not due to the shots you got for the tooth. It has not harmed the baby.
Reply:u should b ok. i was pregnant and had some shots from the dentist once early in pregnancy and everthing was fine.
Reply:Local anesthesia does not cross through placenta. If you ever have concerns about things like this during your pregnancy call your doctor. He should not care if you call him anytime. If he does get a doctor who understand your concerns.
Reply:I think any almost any drug could hurt the baby. I don't know if it would have been anything serious or not. Do you plan to have drugs during labor? Try red raspberry leaf and nettle. You may not need anything else. Natural is the safest.
