It just varies based on the preference of the dentist and the patient. Not a big deal, just different dentists prefer to do things different ways. Dentists are especially likely to use general anesthetic if the patient is anxious about the surgery.
Reply:general anesthesia is used in more complicated and painful procedures. if a nerve may be exposed or the teeth are very oddly set, they will use general. local anesthesia is usually for simple, by the book wisdom tooth extractions.
Reply:Some people like me are dental chickens and do not want to be awake no matter what. Some extractions are too deep or complicated for a local--the person would be uncomfortable sitting still that long as well. You can have the tooth if you ask; but some are shattered into bits to remove; then they are disposed of like any other biological waste.
