Staying comfortable during dentist visit?

I'm going in for a cleaning %26amp; do to pain in my gums they are going to put me under local anesthetic. I've had horrible experiences with dentists in the past and I'm not looking forward to having a needle poked into my gums %26amp; being drilled away at for an hour.

Will an MP3 player help, or will that somewhat isolate the sound of the drills? What else can I do to stay comfortable throughout the cleaning?

Staying comfortable during dentist visit?
Although it may seem a little scary, you don't want to get too worked up about something that may have happened to you in the past at a dentist. If this is a different dentist or hygienist than you have seen before, give them the benefit of the doubt that they are going to do a good job and try their best to make you as comfortable as possible. Also, you may want to ask your dentist to prescribe you a sedative to calm down before the appointment. Your MP3 player might help also. As for the cleaning goes, even though you'll have anesthetic, if you're only there for a cleaning, then no "drills" will be involved... maybe an instrument that makes a little noise and shoots water via ultrasonic waves to help remove the tarter build-up off the roots of your teeth. When it is all over, you're going to be in better condition than you started from and will be glad you did it. Good luck!
Reply:Ask for the nitrous gas - It's wonderful lol - It really helps you calm down
Reply:First, during cleaning , no drill is used!!

Your dentist should have some music and headphones. If not take yours.

Let your dentist know you are nervous. Then be sure a number is used before the shot is given in ur gums. You won't feel a thing.

Good luck!

Reply:If you're going for the deep cleaning they may use a type of drill not to drill but to grind the plaque off. Make sure the dentist applies a numbing medicine first (this has become common practice, usually applied with a q-tip) before the shots. Make sure they wait until the local has taken effect before starting to work. Take your music, turn it up and if you feel any discomfort at all make sure you raise your hand to let them know. Then, just sit back, close your eyes, listen to your music and hopefull it will be done before you know it. Good luck.
Reply:Wear comfortable clothes and use your MP3 player. Think of ur favorite sport, tv show. Set up something to do after the cleaning so u think about it and look forward to it. My husband had to do a deep cleaning and listened to his mp3 player, closed his eyes and sang in his head. He tapped his feet together to the music.
