Local anaesthetic seems to not work for me at all! When I had to have stitches after my 1st child I could feel the midwife threading them through even though they had given me the maximum dose they could-it was agony!!!Then a year later I had treatment on my cervix which had to be stopped halfway through because I was screaming in agony I could feel everything-again I had the max dose of anaesthetic.
My dentist attempted to remove a wisdom tooth last year under local and had to give up-I could feel everything!Yesterday I had that wisdom tooth out under a general-which was fine and they pumped the surrounding area with local anaesthetic to give me pain relief for up to 6 hours after the op-it didn't work at all!
Is this normal?I have been told that you can't be immune to anaesthetic so can anyone explain this? Thanks.
Immune to local anaesthetic???
it is unusual but not unheard of. The problem is that its extensively used, cheap, generally very effective and there is little else available on the market. In all future medical interventions you must tell them prior to doing anything that may require the use of lidocaine so that they can take alternative measures. Don't worry, there are new products coming onto the market constantly and many very effective pain relieving drugs available so you should never be in the same situation again. Good luck to you.
Reply:I have lots of trouble at the Dentist with local anaesthetics too!
It's strange because it's only about 80% of the time so I don't know if it depends on the dentist and where they inject and stuff as it's not every single time...
Once I had more than 6 injections and I could still feel everything!! The Dentist just had to send me home! :-(
Reply:I have this problme at the dentist. One injection is never enough, they usually send me back into the waiting room after a second jab.I think they don't give enough time for the stuff to work before you get called back into the treatment room half the time.
Reply:Sorry i'm no help but i to are intrigued by your Q?? I once went for an op and the local didn't work and had to be put out? but on the same token here i had my eye cut open under a local!! (that was an experience in its'self!!!)
Reply:I haven't really read up on my idea, because it sounds a bit stupid?
But I am convinced that we know very little about our brain, we do know that we only use a very small percentage of it.
I am also willing to believe that we could convince our self we feel no pain, and as long as the brain was ticking over, we would feel no pain!
So maybe it is possible to convince our self that we do feel pain when this is actually impossible, all the nerves in that area are dead they cannot function ?
I had a recent operation which took 5 hours and it had to be done using a local anaesthetic, so I could 'feel' the knife, I could 'feel' the nibbling away inside my vein, but I felt no 'pain'!
Prior to this op' I was injected in the area concerned , they waited about a minute, then sprayed some ice cold stuff around the area, "Can you feel that" ? They kept asking, I certainly could! Then they sprayed the injected area, "Can you feel that"? No I couldn't!
So what ever thoughts I had tried to implant in my little brain box disappeared. Logic took over.
Logically once injected in that area your nerves in that area are dead!
No doctor or dentist are going to 'dilute' the anaesthetic to save a few pennies, it's not a very good ad' for patients waiting outside to hear screams issuing from the surgery area.
The solution in your case????
Convince your brain the local must work, it has been proved it must work! Check it all out, all the details. Convince your self.
Right having said all that , I am going a few steps (massive strides) futher!
I suggest that we could 'wish' our selfs to die within the next few days, (this would be on an individual level ), and without forced starvation , or whatever, it could happen!!!
Is that all rubbish?
It's all in the mind.
And what do we know about the mind? Nothing!
This could go on forever, I just emptied my vodka glass, tipped it up to drain it , I noticed in the bottom of the glass a large eye, I have a vodka glass with a heavy bottom, like a magniyfing glass at the base!
I knew logically there could not be an eye down there, I had only put ice cubes in!
On closer inspection it was my kittens eye, at the base end checking out what I was up to! There is logic for you !!
Reply:Yes , me too. But I tried a holistic dentist who used a herbal anaesthetic %26amp; I didnt feel a thing.
Reply:not sure if u can be immune but with the dentist issue it is possible that it doesnt work for 2 reasons, one is that its not in the right place therefore not numbing the nerves to that particular tooth or secondly if there is an infection in the tooth like an abcess then it will not go numb. my son had this and the dentist wanted to take it out gave him 2 injections waited half hr not numb, 2 more injections, another wait still not numb so gave up having traumatised my son keeping him waiting so long to take the tooth out, gave him antibiotics which settled it down and he never needed the tooth out after all. those are two experiences i have had with local anaesthetic not working. my daughter had an epidural when she had surgery during pregnancy, it was done before the op but when she woke up it was not in correct place and she was in agony so had to go back to theatre to have it re-sited to numb the correct part of her body with no other pain relief she was in agony but cos of being pregnant didnt let her have any other painkillers. i havent answered your query but hopefully its helped a bit.
