when you go to an oral surgeon for that type of treatment you have the option to have either local anesthesia or to Opt into IV sedation.

IV sedation involves both going under as well as Anesthetic to ease the pain when you do come to.

when I had my Wisdom teeth pulled I opted in for IV and I can say that it was a good idea. I recommend it to anyone not allergic who is even the slightest bit worried about Local Anasthecia alone.
Reply:You can request IV sedation from an oral surgeon. That is why the dentist is sending you to an oral surgeon anyway.
Reply:they will put you to sleep
Reply:If your wisdom tooth is impacted, you will need a general anaesthetic, as the surgeon will have to make a tiny cut in the gum to get the tooth out, and you may have a stitch or two. It's nothing to worry about. You will get plenty of pain relief, and you should be able to have it done as a day case.
Reply:If your wisdom teeth aren't getting cut out, then you wont be knocked out. If all he has to do is pull your wisdom teeth and the other tooth then you'll just be thoroughly numbed. If he has to do any type of cutting then you wont be knocked out but there is another type where you awake but your not aware of whats going on around you. Just make sure the oral surgeon knows that you want the wisdom and the rotted tooth out at the pre surgery appointment.
Reply:i just got an impacted wisdom tooth removed and wasnt going to have general anesthetic but not only my dentist told me to just get put to sleep but so did other people i talked to who have had it done.when they pull out a regular tooth its fine to have local, but when they have to cut your gum and saw on your jaw i just think its better to have general.i was scared to death because ive never had general but it was great!i woke up and it was all over!!and yes they will remove your bad tooth too!im am petrified of dentists and i will tell ya this im getting general any chance i get because not only do you not feel anything but you dont have to hear the drilling, sawing, scraping, etc!!its not scary at all!!hope i helped some!!good luck
Reply:numbing locally is fine. it's just a tiny cut on the gums , you won't even feel it.
