This afternoon I had to go to dentist for my 6 mnthly check.
After removing the tartar he was polishing my teeth. Anyhow I started to cough and I could feel something on my tongue but it was too late-I swallowed the cleaning head. I eeved (if that's the way you spell it) and felt it slowly going down my throat.
After I drank about five glasses of water I could still feel it on my chest.
So he rang my local hospital and arranged to have an x ray.
Was told it will pass naturally.
Do you think could have the dentist for misconduct??
Any answers appreciated
Dentist This Afternoon-I Swallowed The Cleaning Head (This Is Not A Joke)?
Accidents of all kinds happen even in the dental office. Perhaps you should consider this....you don't have to have surgery to have it removed from your stomach...it wasn't sharp so it won't perforate the walls of your intestines or colon...It's small and plastic (if it was a prophy head) and they are disposable (so you don't have to return it) and sterile so it won't kill you. The way I see it, you have two choices, think of your self as lucky, it could have been much worse. Or be one of those lawsuit happy people who prefer to cause harm to someone else for something that's just what it is.....an accident. You might possibly make a little money off of it, at the dentist expense, but have you considered the consequences of it yet? That being, finding a new dentist because you wouldn't feel comfortable going back to this one, and they wouldn't feel comfortable taking care of you although they would never tell you or show it. Not to mention your reputation of being someone who sues the doctor/practice easily will follow you to the next doctor. We all talk, trust me, your not the first nor will you be the last. Good luck in whichever way you choose. Let your conscience be your guide.
Reply:Go for money mate
Reply:I wouldnt sue the guy just because you are going to worry until you poop the thing out. It will pass on its own and cause no damage to you.
Reply:Ha ha ha ha ha - Sorry - I suppose if it causes you any pain and discomfort you could always get advice from citizens advice bureau
Reply:Don't sue him, he did as much for you after the event as he could,
Just dont give it back to him when you do eventually get it back
Reply:No. Considering that you will be fine and it will pass naturally, you don't have grounds for misconduct.
Reply:You are what is wrong with America
Reply:I think he should at least give you free cleanings for a year or something like that. Did he feel bad about it?
Depends on how he acted. Probably an accident, but if he laughed and acted like oh well, then you might get a Lawyer.
Reply:no, i worked in the dental field for many years...it won't hurt you, its a small rubber cup that just came unscrewed. it was not misconduct or malice so its not really an issue of whether or not he's a bad dentist. as the hospital told you you will probably pass it naturally. the fact the dentist sent you to the hospital to make sure you didn't 'inhale' it into your lungs and that it indeed was in your intestinal tract was a responsible thing to do. if you would have 'inhaled' it into your lungs then they would have had to surgically remove it because you would not be able to pass it. when a dentist is working on your mouth there is always the danger of things being swallowed that a natural reaction from the patient when things drop in. they try to avoid it at all costs but sometimes accidents happen. ask yourself what you would do to him as a result of this? sue? bring him up on charges? complain to the dental association? what kind of compensation are you seeking? the choice is up to you as to what to do but personally i wouldn't worry about it. it will pass naturally within a couple of days.
Reply:Hi,
Sorry to hear that you had this happen to you. You really have an excellent dentist. He did not have to send you to the hospital for an x-ray, but he did. He was really concerned that you may have inhaled it. You didn't. Good thing. Some dentist could not give a crap what happens to you when something like this happens. Just let nature take its course. Continue to go to that dentist. Don't do anything else about it. Don't ask for anything but a free toothbrush after your cleanings.
Good luck and continue taking care of your teeth.
Reply:It wasn`t his fault he did the best he could do for you
Accidents do happen , but whats wrong when everybody wants to sue everybody
I think its terrible
Reply:I'm sorry only couldn't help but giggle that would be like something that would happen to me sorry. Well I think that the dentist must be feeling bad especially if he got you to have an x ray accidents do happen go back and see him, if you do anything you may not get anything out of it and it wouldn't be good for the dentist really, bet he is worried sick and bet he would have rang the hospital to find out how you are hope you pass it soon
