So earlier I asked about my symptoms, and got the same response from everyone. You have a tooth abscess! Well, I was researching it and realized that it could be deadly. The infection can spread to the jaw bone, throat(causing you to stop breating) or brain(may need brain surgery then or can cause death). I am really worried because I have been ignoring it for quite a few days! The pain is starting to stop, but reading about it i realized this is when it gets even more dangerous! I need to know how many days do I have left until this can get that serious! Also, I am pretty sure it is on my bottom back tooth, however I have mild pain on my top teeth on the same side? What are the chances of it spreading to my brain? Please answer! I can't get medical attention easily because I live on a college campus and have no car and almost no means of getting by, also i dont really know any local dentists. I can go to the school clinic but dont know how much they can do! Please help!
Can anyone help? Freaking out!?
The cases of an abcess killing someone via septicemia or brain infection are usually very progressed cases.
I wouldn't tarry if I were you, but you might have another problem than a tooth abcess. Please don't let Y!A diagnose you and certainly don't start freaking out.
I'm a BIG ol' hypochondriac and would NEVER ask a health question on here because I'd think I had Ebola or something :)
Anyway, the progressed cases are ones that let it go for months and the people typically had lowered immunities or were immune compromised in the first place due to malnutrition, recent illness or age (either very young or very old).
So, in any case, you're in the safe zone to make it to the dentist ASAP. Even if it's next week.
Try to go tomorrow if you can anyway, just for peace of mind and antibiotics.
Actually since you said you're in college, that leads me to believe that you're the age for your wisdom teeth to start cutting up. That would definitely explain the pain on both the upper and lower bones. Wisdom teeth (especially those that are impacted) are boogers! They can make you think you have a brain tumor.
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!
Reply:Don't freak out. Breath, take a second and relax.
Tomorrow morning go to the clinic at your school. Chances are they won't be able to do much for you, but they will be able to refer you to a dentist near campus or refer you to some resources available to you.
Other than that, there is nothing you can do tonight. So TRY not to worry about it. Even though a tooth abscess CAN be deadly, it can't spread to your brain and kill you over the corse of a couple days. If it could, don't you think you would hear of alot more people dying of a tooth abscess?
Reply:my college had a free doctor on site... i am willing to bet yours does too.
Reply:You need to get it taken care of girl! Take the bus, a cab or something. Someone must be there to help you if you're on a big campus! What are you waiting for...... get off the computer and go get it done!
Reply:I don't know what your medical system is like but get to a Doctor asap. They can prescribe antibiotics so the dentist can do something when the abscess has gone down; a dentist can't pull or work on an inflamed tooth. Surely there's some medical help available on campus????
Reply:It is very unlikely for this to go to your brain or any of that. If you have a school clinic then go. They will give you an antibiotic.. it is easy to treat. But you are right, in rare cases, an abcessed tooth can be deadly. A woman at my company died from one. But before it gets systemic to the point of death, there is huge swelling, fever, sickness... it isn't somethng that generally sneaks up on you. So anyway, if you have a bad tooth, it is easy to treat. Go to your school clinic and they will give you a round of antibiotics which will knock down the infection in a matter of hours or very few days. After that, go to any dentist and they can treat the problem.
Reply:Serious dental infections are accompanied by fever and swelling. I didn't read your earlier symptoms. It's possible to have a tooth die (very painful) without becoming infected very quickly(or at all). bottom teeth that are infected will drain downwards and cause swelling of the lower jaw . When swelling restricts your ability to open your mouth is when you are in trouble. It will not spread to top teeth or into the brain. The top tooth probably hurts due to clenching because you are freaked out by all of this. In the last 21 years, I've seen only three people come through the clinics with potentially lifethreatening infections. It happens, but it's uncommon. Use your time wisely to make plans and don't panic.
Reply:I had a tooth abscess once. i also ignoreed it for a few days thinking of it as a plain toothache. I think all the fatal symptoms are just for really bad cases. I just got away w/ antibiotics and a root canal.
Reply:it's school clinic time.
Reply:Relax you'll be fine you are reading far too much into this! Get the abcsess treated because they dont go away they only come back worse. Just get it treated and you'll be fine
