Hi,
I'm a bit worried and would appreciate a solid answer, or links to professional/medical sites where I could read more about this.
I had a LOT of dental work done over the weekend, I had to get fillings for all 4 of my rear molars (the ones just before the wisdom teeth). I think I've experienced all sorts of anesthesia.
The one I liked least was when the dentist put some gel on my gums, injected me with a local, then drilled a hole in my jawbone, then injected some more anesthetic.
Now a day later, I have this "bruise" on my lower cheek around the spot where he drilled, the size of a 0.25$... It doesn't hurt when I touch it (which I understood would be very bad, and for that I would have called the dentist for another appointment), and it doesn't hurt inside my mouth either, but...
WHAT IS THAT!? It's creeping me out. Am I bleeding some weird way? I'm not bleeding inside my mouth because I would taste it. So what's going on?
Any help, please? =/ I feel like a wimp! =/
Bluish "bruise" after local anesthesia (bone drill)- what is it??
Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and I want you to stop stressing and listen. If he drilled into the bone, which I'm wondering why, maybe an infection at the root tip?, bruising is not uncommon. This is a simple hematoma no different than if your bang yourself and get a bruise. Your mouth has many very tiny veins and they can cause this and it is no big deal. It heals pretty quickly and without pain is not an issue. Remember in the future, no pain, no major problem. Pain, call right away. If you had tons of dental work, and are blond, light skin of color, you bruise more easily. Just the nature of you body. I had a patient bruise around her cheek and wa confused about it and asked her, are you taking any meds? She said she was on Birth control and took alot of aspirin for head aches and cramps. Bingo. That added to the problem. Some times OTC pain meds, allergy meds can add to this. So do your homework and look back to what meds you have taken in the last few days, or weeks, alcohol, smoking etc, also can contribute to this. I would not worry. This will resolve and you will be fine. M
Reply:Sounds like he used an "x-tip" on you to get you numb and bruising is very normal with it. As long as your not having any discomfort, you should be fine. Don't worry too much and have a good weekend!!
Reply:I had my wisdom teeth out last April, and from what I heard, they were a bit difficult to get out. The two on the bottom had roots that were wrapped around the nerve, so they had to saw my bottom wisdom teeth into 4 pieces to get them out. I had an outstanding surgeon, but for days after the surgery, I had blue, purple, green and yellow bruising along my jawbone and partially down my neck. I was told that bruising is common when you have a large amount of dental work done whether it be surgery or not. It should fade in about a week or two. Now if the bruise starts getting bigger and more painful, I'd be concerned and give your dentist a call/visit right away. I hope I helped you.
