My friend has had trouble with his teeth for some time now. He cannot seem to get access to a local NHS dentist, although he is entitled. It doesn't seem fair that he would have to travel over 100 miles for basic/decent treatment, and is consequently leaving it to fate.

How much are white fillings?
i went to a cosmetic dentist and he wants to charge £225 per white filling...surely that cant be right?!
im sure a local NHS dentist is like £30 a tooth...surely there cant be a £200 quality gap in just a filling...???

I am sure the last one I had done cost £45 that was private at my local dentist, My husband had 3 mercury ones removed at a place that specialised in removing them without causing any of the mercury to get into your body, and then they replaced them all three with white ones, that cost £300 for all the work done and the 3 new fillings, so I think your place are too expensive shop around if I were you or ask friends where they had theirs done and how much it was and wether they would recommend the dentist, good luck, hope its pain free on your mouth and your pocket!!!

I had a run in with a receptionist at my local NHS dentist and I want to complain but I don't want to send a letter to the actual dentist because I don't think they will deal with it. Is there a place I can write to? I know she is not a nurse, just a receptionist.

As the first face that is seen as a patient walks through the door, they should appreciate that both easing and adding to the patient's anxiety is completely in their hands and I have been on the receiving end of a fair few who frankly shouldn't be working in surgeries and clinics with the attitudes they have.
You're right not to complain directly to the dentist because although they might be a bit disgruntled that their receptionist has upset a patient, they are likely to iron things over nice and smoothly in the end because they still have to work with him or her. For fair discipline, write to your Primary Care Trust and as someone else said, send a copy of the letter to the dentist (only if you want to) because that way you are telling the dentist what he or she has done, yet you are leaving it to a higher body to deal with the actual complaint. Cracked tooth need help?
A couple of hours ago, i banged my chin on the sink, it wasnt hard, but it chipped my front tooth slightly. Bits of the tooth kept coming off, and now half the tooth is gone. I look ridiculous. Luckily, its the holidays so i dont have to worry about school, but my mom cant find a local emergency dentist. And since its sunday tomorrow, im going to have to wait until monday, then my mom is going to phone my dentist and ask for an emergency appointment. She says that they will just add the extra bit off the tooth back on with a cap or something, and everything will be fine.
Im really worried, what do i need to do?

My wisdom teeth have started to come through, but have grown into my molars (an erupted impaction). I am in heaps and heaps of pain, and need to have them removed. One problem being that where I live, there isn't a dentist I can register with for about a 20 mile radius, and I dont drive. The pain is stopping me sleeping. Is there any way I can get them removed without being registered at a dentist (no crazy answers, like tying string round them!!) I have attended the local emergency dentist a few times, but they will only provide temporary measures. I really need help with this. Thanks

If you really can't find a dentist go to your docs and ask them to refer you to the orthodontic dept at your local hosp. Many dentists won't take wisdom teeth out in their surgeries and refer you anyway. That's what happened with me, I had all 4 teeth taken out at once, no probs.

(Even if they normally service out of the town you are going to, they should still be able to come pick you up for an extra fee) You really should not do it yourself because there are many many things that can go wrong and make things even worse. You need to find some way to get to a dentist. You could also try calling a dentist office or hospital and see what they recommend.
Reply:I don't have a dentist either and when i was having problems with my wisdom tooth i went to the local dental hospital, who gave me antibiotics and put me on the waiting list to have it out. Less than 6 months later I am one tooth down!!
But be prepared it hurts like hell for days and can cause problems with opening your mouth! But having said that a month later and I'm almost back to normal!!!

I've seen my dentist and have 2 impacted bottom wisdom teeth which haven't erupted.
I also have one top one unerupted, and a top one which is erupted but growing sideways.

Should I have them removed under general or local anaesthetic?
(I'm scared I have never even had a filling before).
The dentist said it is likely they will need to cut into the bone to remove the bottom ones.
Secondly, is it covered by medicare (in Australia) if you have it done under general, and is there a wating list?
I have private extras cover which I'm prety sure would cover the cost if I had it under local at dentists office, but I'm not sure about if it would cover the general anaesthetic removal, and if it does cover the cost of teeth removal do you then still have to pay anaesthatist fees etc?

I had friends who had had it done under a general and a few of them had had severe bruising and swelling. One even had a bruise on her chest where she thinks the dentist leaned to pull the teeth out.
My logic was, if I am awake at least I know that the dentist has to be careful, because I could see everythin he was doing!

Why is there adrenaline in with the lignocaine they use as a local jab for your teeth?
It just makes one more stressed and more prone to fainting.

There shouldn't be adrenaline in lidocaine. You may be getting the jitters from the epinephrine. Epinephrine is put in the anesthetic to control the amount of spread that the injection has.
There is an epinephrine-free version of the anesthetic. You just have to tell them that the anesthetic used last time made you jumpy.

It would be the endorphins that numbed the pain. Just like a thumb goes numb when you hit it with a hammer, that is your beta endorphins working.

Tooth Extraction on Friday? With laughing gas and local anesthesia (the one they inject on your gums)?
I have to get a tooth pulled on Friday and I am SUPER nervous! I need to know what I can do before the extraction to calm down, or to make the pain less painful. How much will it hurt? The tooth I am gettting pulled, for all of you dentists out there, is the "mandibular right (lateral) incisor #26 (lingual)" on the bottom. Can you please describe how the procedure will be done and what I can take for the pain afterwards. Also, please let me know how the shot will feel after the laughing gas has been applied. Thanks sooo much!!

From experience I can tell you that the laughing gas does not help with pain at all. Call your dentist and let them know that you are very nervous and ask that they call you in a prescription. They may require that you have someone drive you to the appointment if they give you the scrip.
Reply:Bring your ipod, I recommend that to patients who are not having general anesthesia. # 26 is generally a pretty easy tooth to extract by an oral surgeon. First we place some topical anesthetic (cherry at my office), then you will get a shot to numb the area. You get to sit a few minutes while the local takes affect, then you will only feel pushing and pressure, no sharp or pain. It may sound a little strange, then it'll be all over. Just make sure you listen %26amp; follow the post-operative instructions. I've had teeth extracted myself. Good Luck, and try to relax.
Reply:if your getting both the laughing gas and anesthesia they will knock you out with the laughing gas first so you wont feel the needle at all, when you wake up your mouth will be numb for a few hours and it might hurt a little after that, but the dentist will normally give you some pain pills for that
Reply:I'm not a dentist, but I'm a mother. Some dentists apparently give some kind of sedatives for just before the extraction. My daughter had four wisdom teeth removed last year. She tried the laughing gas, and didn't like the feeling, so the dentist stopped and she just did it on Novacaine. She didn't feel a thing. Afterwards, the dentist gave her painkillers which helped. Your dentist will do the same. My husband swears by laughing gas for dental work. He says it makes you not care. So give it a try, and if you don't like it, just ask the dentist to stop it and he will.

If you look around this site, a lot of the people on it write in saying they are having wisdom teeth (can't be too different in feel from the mandibular) removed, and many people always write in to say that it isn't so terrible. Just eat soft foods for a few days, and follow the dentist's directions. he'll tell you exactly what to do. And as i said, try not worry too much. It'll be over before you know it.

I just had one of my molar teeth pulled at the University of Michigan Dental School about 2 weeks ago. I will tell you just what they did to me.
They simply numb the tooth they are planning to pull. You may have foul taste in your mouth when the dentist injects the numbing medication. (Make sure you have a suction tube handy). Then, the dentist will make sure you cannot feel your tooth that will be pulled. The dentist uses a luxator.
This tool is used to elevate the tooth from the socket. You will feel quite a bit of pressure while the dentist loosens your tooth. Then he/she will use dental forcepts to remove the roots from your gums.
After your tooth is extracted. You will be given gauge to bite on to control bleeding. Make sure you you wet down the gauge to avoid dry socket otherwise you will be in horrible pain if you allow the tooth socket to be dried out.
CHANGE THE GAUSE EVERY 30 MINUTES UTIL THE BLEEDING STOPS. THE GOAL IS TO GET BLOOD CLOT AT THE EXTRACTION SITE TO STOP POST OPERATIVE BLEEDING.
The bleeding should resolve within 24 to 48 hours have the procedure. The extraction sit should heal after 2 weeks or so.
For the first 72 hours after your procedure. Eat soft foods and drink cool fluids. No straw sucking or smoking for 3 days after your tooth extractron.
Make sure you get plenty of rest and use ice packs to minimize any facial swelling. Ask the doctor for pain medication such as Tylenol 3 with Codene.

From experience I can tell you that the laughing gas does not help with pain at all. Call your dentist and let them know that you are very nervous and ask that they call you in a prescription. They may require that you have someone drive you to the appointment if they give you the scrip.
Reply:Bring your ipod, I recommend that to patients who are not having general anesthesia. # 26 is generally a pretty easy tooth to extract by an oral surgeon. First we place some topical anesthetic (cherry at my office), then you will get a shot to numb the area. You get to sit a few minutes while the local takes affect, then you will only feel pushing and pressure, no sharp or pain. It may sound a little strange, then it'll be all over. Just make sure you listen %26amp; follow the post-operative instructions. I've had teeth extracted myself. Good Luck, and try to relax.
Reply:if your getting both the laughing gas and anesthesia they will knock you out with the laughing gas first so you wont feel the needle at all, when you wake up your mouth will be numb for a few hours and it might hurt a little after that, but the dentist will normally give you some pain pills for that

My fiance fell on the 22nd December and broke his three front teeth, I tried numerous dentists, local hospital emergency departments etc and i could not find one that worked until the 3rd January. The dental service should be ashamed!!!

if your fiance had been a member of denplan he would have been able to access a dentist immediately, denplan would have paid the dentist to come out to see him and paid for the emergency treatment, its a fantastic plan to join, nxt time you are in the dentist ask them about it. You could try going onto the denplan website and asking them to find you a dentist i am sure they would source one for you.

when you go to an oral surgeon for that type of treatment you have the option to have either local anesthesia or to Opt into IV sedation.
IV sedation involves both going under as well as Anesthetic to ease the pain when you do come to.
when I had my Wisdom teeth pulled I opted in for IV and I can say that it was a good idea. I recommend it to anyone not allergic who is even the slightest bit worried about Local Anasthecia alone.

I just got a root canal done by my local endodontist and it used up all of my insurance..................?
The problem is that as soon as it was done I was sent to my regular dentist who said before they could put a crown on they need to remove an impacted wisdom tooth which I have to go to another specialist to do. The crown is going to cost me 800 and I was wondering if there is anything I could do to get the price down? Or if it's alright if I wait till the new year to get the procedures done?

Fortunately, it is now mid-August and you don't have to wait an entire year for your benefits to renew (assuming your insurance benefits run from Jan - Dec.)
Go back to your general dentist and tell him your benefits have been exhausted by the endodontist. Ask him if the temporary will last until January - he or she should be able to tell you. It is not to the dentist's advantage to make you pay out of pocket, more likely to get paid by insurance than by individuals.
As far as the wisdom tooth: it might be OK to wait on the extraction, but if the impacted tooth is next to the root canal, it may be in the way of doing the crown. There must be a reason the dentist wants the impacted tooth gone before he/she places the crown.
Not much room to discount crowns since there is a lab fee for the dentist to pay. If you have good credit and have been with this practice for a long time, they may extend limited payments to you.

I always need about 3 shots %26amp; so does my daughter. My dentist says some people are resistant to the anaesthetic. I think the more anxious you are the more your body fights the drugs.

Reply:I do the same. My dentist says it's my metabolism. That I just metabolize it quickly. Also he says (teasingly) that that's why he hates me and I stay skinny. He says that he gives me the 12 hour Novocain and it lasts about 5 minutes. He's gotten to where he has me take a Valium one hour before I come and have someone drive me.
Reply:NO WAY.there is not such a thing as immunity. i think you are so scared of feeling pain and not having a full anesthesia that you actually wont have one. I can assure you that if you control your anxiety , your dentistry appointments wouldn't be pain full at all. there is one more thing :some of the patients need more than one shot . its not weired.
even if you supposed to metabolised it fast it can not be gone in 5 minutes.unless you have a super turbo liver!!! you say you dont get it in first place. so its not your metabolism.
Reply:All people are supposed to be "numbable" but I can tell you from 31 years experience that patients respond differently. There are also different anesthetics in use; some work better than others.
Injections on lower teeth are dependent on patient anatomy and the dentist's skill in putting the juice where it's needed.
Any dentist IMO that doesn't respect a patient's need for better pain control deserves to lose that patient.

Reply:Absolutely. This runs in my family also. I always have to stop the dentist midway through a procedure for more anesthetic. I have had dentists tell me it isn't possible I could be feeling anything - yet when they stop and test the tooth for sensitivity they find it is indeed not deadened. A good dentist will recognize this is a problem if you tell them ahead of time. My current dentist has me take a painkiller by mouth 30 minutes to an hour before a procedure before he gives the local. That has worked pretty well the last couple of time or so.

Guys is it possible that im immune to local anithesia?
I always need about 3 shots %26amp; so does my daughter. My dentist says some people are resistant to the anaesthetic. I think the more anxious you are the more your body fights the drugs.

Reply:I do the same. My dentist says it's my metabolism. That I just metabolize it quickly. Also he says (teasingly) that that's why he hates me and I stay skinny. He says that he gives me the 12 hour Novocain and it lasts about 5 minutes. He's gotten to where he has me take a Valium one hour before I come and have someone drive me.
Reply:NO WAY.there is not such a thing as immunity. i think you are so scared of feeling pain and not having a full anesthesia that you actually wont have one. I can assure you that if you control your anxiety , your dentistry appointments wouldn't be pain full at all. there is one more thing :some of the patients need more than one shot . its not weired.
even if you supposed to metabolised it fast it can not be gone in 5 minutes.unless you have a super turbo liver!!! you say you dont get it in first place. so its not your metabolism.
Reply:All people are supposed to be "numbable" but I can tell you from 31 years experience that patients respond differently. There are also different anesthetics in use; some work better than others.
Injections on lower teeth are dependent on patient anatomy and the dentist's skill in putting the juice where it's needed.
Any dentist IMO that doesn't respect a patient's need for better pain control deserves to lose that patient.

Reply:Absolutely. This runs in my family also. I always have to stop the dentist midway through a procedure for more anesthetic. I have had dentists tell me it isn't possible I could be feeling anything - yet when they stop and test the tooth for sensitivity they find it is indeed not deadened. A good dentist will recognize this is a problem if you tell them ahead of time. My current dentist has me take a painkiller by mouth 30 minutes to an hour before a procedure before he gives the local. That has worked pretty well the last couple of time or so.

My daughter has an app for an EEG @ our local hospital?
she is 3 years old and doesnt cope too well with change eg when we have an app at the dentist a few weeks before i have to get dentist kit out and play pretend but i have no clue as to how i am going to act out an EEG so that she doesnt freak out on the actual day. any help is much appreciated

Adelaide above had a good answer but if you don't have that kind of time, why not take her into the hospital a few days early (you could call ahead and see if you can get permission) and go directly to the waiting area where they will call you during your EEG appointment.... see if you can get them to take her INTO that "dimly lit room" and get her familiar with the machines and have them stick a few wires to her head in a non rushed kind of friendly way as not to scare her and then when she comes back for the "real thing" she will already have the procedure imbedded in her brain and not fear it....this will also help YOU to see where her fears might take her during the REAL procedure. Usually, the technicans are really supper friendly to the little ones they have to examine and they will try their very best to ease whatever tensions and fears your little girl might have during the appointment. I'm not so sure they WOULD let her come in and see the room and machines, but they MIGHT if you explain how fearful she is in strange places.... wouldn't hurt to TRY anyway.

Take her for a walk and go past the hospital.
Then another day take her for a walk around the hospital.
Call your doc and get a nurse to meet her, they can try for the same one shes going to see that day. She can try and sit in in their play session, or just let her sit in the play area of a waiting room.
Then on another day get the same nurse to talk her through, or show her whats going to happen.
That way if she does freak out, when its a mock, she will see nothing is scary so she can calm down and you dont have to do it that day, so that the day you do come back she wont be freaked out as she will already have seen its not scary.

basically, you go into a dimly lit room and there's a hospital bed and my baby and i laid in the bed and they used a red pen to mark his head and then some gel to stick a bunch of plugs onto his head and then they wrapped it up like a big bandage over his head and i put him to sleep with a bottle (yeah, we had to stay up ALL night to prepare) and we both conked out for about 1 hr. then it was over and no problem.
they removed the wrap and electrodes and we left.
i would prepare her by laying her in bed, get a red marker and mark her head in different spots. then get some gel and a bunch of peices of string and "Stick" the ends of strings onto her head and then wrap her head up with some gauze. then tell her that you will lay with her and take a nap!
that's what i would do!!
take care adn don't worry too much..it's a lot less scary than the dentist!
Reply:I do a modified EEG on pt's at work. I tell the women that it is going to feel like I'm doing you're hair but I'm really messing it up. First I measure and mark points on the scalp with a grease pencil. Next I paste on lots of wires. No pain is involved. I like to tell kids that nobody will believe that they had soo many wires on and I'll take a picture so they can show everyone when they get home. When they start getting antsy during the wiring I look at them and say "oh, that will look so great for the picture". Try not to be nervous- she'll pick up on it. Hope this helps.

Well, I may not be chosen as your best answer. but I can promise you I am the most believable. I just had (three days ago) very extensive oral surgery and they pulled more than one tooth, with nothing but numbing the area. He waited till I reported no feeling in my lip, and then he pulled away. there is pressure. but it does not hurt. I helped hold my head still so he could get some grip and get the tooth out. I didn't feel a thing ! And ignore the idiot that blamed you for not taking care of your teeth...so you must put up with all the fear.what an idiot.you can have extractions for MANY reasons other than decay. (not enough room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth....some people actually have extra teeth than we are supposed to develop which entails extracting that tooth.....car wrecks that destroy someones teeth...DUH!!!!! )people can be so dumb and ignorant when they are the uninformed ones and too immature to know these other scenarios that result in extractions.....not just neglect.which is the case in some , but not always.
My advice:
eat a good breakfast due to needing to wait awhile
before eating afterwards
ask for time after they give you the shot
to numb up well
ask him to test if you are numb by poking slightly in
your mouth to test for numbness in the area of the
tooth
think about something other than what's going on in
your mouth while the dentist is working
afterwards, do exactly what the dentist advises for
aftercare of the extraction site (pressure with gauze until bleeding stops,not eating right away, no smoking or straw use or soda for 48 hrs. ...this suction can pull the blood clot out of the empty socket and cause MUCH pain...and they have to pack meds in there to heal it instead.- it's called a"dry socket"...ask him....he'll tell you. also, Also. the morning following extraction...do the rinsing with 50%peroxide and 50% mouthwash...any brand.. it helps heal-the ingredient in the mouthwash)..and the peroxide keeps infection out. Swish several times a day but for sure after meals to flush food out. Rinse at night for sure and throughout the day with saltwater to help heal the wound. Salt helps so much. Your extraction site will close up day by day.......and no more problems from that tooth !!!!!

(all of the back ones as they had become black due to my addiction of sweets) It was nothing. you dont feel a thing. you go to sleep and when you wake up your mouth feels abit numb and weird due to the missing teeth. And the occaisional taste of blood every time you swallow. Dont worry about it.

A lot people over the years have died uneccessarily on the dentists chair because general anesthetics are dangerous...this probably why your hospital refused. Its serious stuff. If you're not going to look after your teeth regularly, then you will have to suffer the pain that comes with that...but....theres no need to die to save a bit of pain!!!.
Reply:If you really are that scared then providing that there isn't a medical reason why the hospital wont give you a general anaesthesia then you are within your rights to insist on having a local.If you do not feel up to fighting your corner alone go and visit your G.P. and explain the situation a letter of support from him or her would help your case alot.Remember it's your body and only you how you really feel.Stand your ground and don't let them grind you down.
Reply:Trust me, you won't feel a thing. I'm a complete coward with that kind of thing. I had a wisdom tooth out at the local 'sedation clinic' under a local and didn't even know it was happening. My friend said I'd only been in their about 10 minutes but I honestly can't remember a thing.
Reply:I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed at the same time under local anesthetic. As long as they numb you right, it shouldn't be an issue. I didn't feel a thing until about 2-3 hours afterwards, and after that I was taking T3 for the pain.
Local anesthetic means lidocaine injection btw for people who are talking about how they went under for it. General is sedation, I.E "going to sleep.
Reply:Had a tooth out under local when I went to the dentist just before Christmas. He's tried filling it but there was a crack that meant it was still hurting like mad when cold liquids hit it. Dentist said if it were his he'd have it out and if I wanted he's do it there an then. I said yes. It was one of the most scary things I have experienced. Forget nice delicate dentistry and think a pair of surgical pliers and brute force (dentist pushing against head with one hand whilst twisting and pulling with the other). It was scary and horrible (could hear the roots breaking - like pulling a plant up) but DID NOT HURT. It bled for 2 minutes afterwards a tiny tiny bit. It hurt a bit for a few days but a dose of ibuprofen kept that at bay. Within a few days it felt a bit strange but ok. A week later I was eating Christmas dinner and so so glad I'd had it out. Now, a month or so later, I can;t beleive I left it so long to get it sorted. I'm also going to go back every 6 months.
In summary, it's natural to be scared, it may well be unpleasant and scary (but shouldn't be painful) but the end result is fantastic!

Most patients consider this discomfort a small price to pay for pain relief. When enough of the right drug is injected in the right place, it will soon provide pain relief. You may still be able to feel touch, pressure and tugging. But, you should not feel pain.
Local anesthesia avoids some of the risks and side effectsof general anesthesia. But, local anesthesia is not suitable for all surgery.
Reply:It will be alright. Local anesthetic is better because you are awake and know what is going on and it wont hurt a bit. The doctor will numb you good. You just feel a sting at the injection site. Under general anesthetic with nitrous oxide gas you are not aware of it and depending on the person administering it to you, side affects arent always favorable.
If concerned ask the dentist to talk it through with you before and give you options. Just breathe!

if you are having a local anaesthetic don't worry you will feel a tiny nip from it and then 10 minutes later the whole tooth area will be numb and you won't feel a thing :~)
Reply:Try to relax and talk to the person who is going to perform the procedure. The jab will sting and then you will be left for a few mins till the drugs kick in, they will not start till you tell them that you can't feel anything. You will feel pulling and tugging and may hear drilling but you will not be in paain till the drugs wear off and then you can take painkillers and maybe antibiotics to stop infection. The surgeon may cover your eyes if you are really nervous. You will be fine good luck and think of the pain free mouth at the end of it.

A lot people over the years have died uneccessarily on the dentists chair because general anesthetics are dangerous...this probably why your hospital refused. Its serious stuff. If you're not going to look after your teeth regularly, then you will have to suffer the pain that comes with that...but....theres no need to die to save a bit of pain!!!.
Reply:If you really are that scared then providing that there isn't a medical reason why the hospital wont give you a general anaesthesia then you are within your rights to insist on having a local.If you do not feel up to fighting your corner alone go and visit your G.P. and explain the situation a letter of support from him or her would help your case alot.Remember it's your body and only you how you really feel.Stand your ground and don't let them grind you down.
Reply:Trust me, you won't feel a thing. I'm a complete coward with that kind of thing. I had a wisdom tooth out at the local 'sedation clinic' under a local and didn't even know it was happening. My friend said I'd only been in their about 10 minutes but I honestly can't remember a thing.
Reply:I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed at the same time under local anesthetic. As long as they numb you right, it shouldn't be an issue. I didn't feel a thing until about 2-3 hours afterwards, and after that I was taking T3 for the pain.
Local anesthetic means lidocaine injection btw for people who are talking about how they went under for it. General is sedation, I.E "going to sleep.
Reply:Had a tooth out under local when I went to the dentist just before Christmas. He's tried filling it but there was a crack that meant it was still hurting like mad when cold liquids hit it. Dentist said if it were his he'd have it out and if I wanted he's do it there an then. I said yes. It was one of the most scary things I have experienced. Forget nice delicate dentistry and think a pair of surgical pliers and brute force (dentist pushing against head with one hand whilst twisting and pulling with the other). It was scary and horrible (could hear the roots breaking - like pulling a plant up) but DID NOT HURT. It bled for 2 minutes afterwards a tiny tiny bit. It hurt a bit for a few days but a dose of ibuprofen kept that at bay. Within a few days it felt a bit strange but ok. A week later I was eating Christmas dinner and so so glad I'd had it out. Now, a month or so later, I can;t beleive I left it so long to get it sorted. I'm also going to go back every 6 months.
In summary, it's natural to be scared, it may well be unpleasant and scary (but shouldn't be painful) but the end result is fantastic!

Reply:It will be alright. Local anesthetic is better because you are awake and know what is going on and it wont hurt a bit. The doctor will numb you good. You just feel a sting at the injection site. Under general anesthetic with nitrous oxide gas you are not aware of it and depending on the person administering it to you, side affects arent always favorable.

if you are having a local anaesthetic don't worry you will feel a tiny nip from it and then 10 minutes later the whole tooth area will be numb and you won't feel a thing :~)
Reply:Try to relax and talk to the person who is going to perform the procedure. The jab will sting and then you will be left for a few mins till the drugs kick in, they will not start till you tell them that you can't feel anything. You will feel pulling and tugging and may hear drilling but you will not be in paain till the drugs wear off and then you can take painkillers and maybe antibiotics to stop infection. The surgeon may cover your eyes if you are really nervous. You will be fine good luck and think of the pain free mouth at the end of it.

Will it Hurt having teeth out?
Soon, I am gettin braces! but i have to have 3 teeth out, because of over crowding.
I'm getting it done at my local dentists, and i'm not sure if i'm going to get numbed, or put to sleep, but either way, do you think it will hurt alot? because i'm not too good with pain. :p x

They will numb you up so you won't feel a THING at all. The only thing that will hurt is the next couple of days. Not HURT HURT but your mouth will be a little sore. So stick to soft foods for a while.
You'll be okay though, don't worry. My mom's a dental assistant so I know what it's all about.
also, you can bring some music to listen to so you'll be a at ease when they give you the hook up.

Reply:OMG I was totally freaking out when I had to get my 4 teeth pulled for the same reasons as you, but I am telling you I had NO, Zero, Zip problems or pain. You have Nothing to worry about. The only thing that kind of hurts are the shots to numb you, but when they are pulling the teeth out all you can feel is the pressure, and you might hear a couple of cracks. I was also surprised how FAST those teeth come out. Mine per tooth took probably 20 seconds.

Reply:I had a tooth pulled two months ago. The dentist gave me a shot to numb the area. Even though I didn't feel pain when the tooth was coming out there is pain after the numbness goes away. You need to keep the space cleaned and gargle frequently so that if any food particles goes into the empty space it wont smell.
Reply:If your dentist is good the answer is no, it shouldn't hurt. He should numb the area where teeth will be extracted. You might feel a sting when the local goes in. After it's good and numb he'll push around it with what looks like a small spoon to make sure that you don't have any extra nerves going to that tooth, then he'll slowly apply pressure until it comes out. The key word is PRESSURE. That's something you'll definitely feel and unless they do put you asleep for it you can't get out of it, but you shouldn't feel pain. Once you get home I'd take some Motrin before the numb feeling wears off, not because it will hurt but because it will feel irritated. Eat soft things for a couple of days, ice cream and Popsicles are good. Your mouth heals fast. Not a lot of pain, more like a scraped knee. Just annoying. Good luck!

Dentists are not generally going to allow you to make payments unless it's a procedure such as a bridge that is going to take more than one visit to complete. Then they will expect you to just have your part paid in full by the time the bridge is actually seated in your mouth. Good luck in your quest to find one that will accept payments, but don't get your hopes up.

Would local anesthetic affect transaminase levels?
Had a crown put on at the dentist and had to have weekly anesthetic via injection to numb the gum. Had my transaminase levels checked and they were elevated.

Dental local anesthetic?
I noticed that when I go to the dentist if I get more than one shot per visit I start to feel awful like a passing out type of feeling and weakness and just abnormal feeling. But when I only get one shot I do just fine, no problem. Is this normal? Does it have anything to do with body weight. I"m currently about 95 pounds. I need to have a root canal done soon but I'm worried I can't handle too much anesthetic shots. Won't there be many shots for a root canal procedure? Especially since I use carbocaine it wears off very fast. I don't use the shots with epinephrine because they cause pounding heart.

Ask dentist about a presevative free deader, also could be from the pre shot bubble gum tasting stuff they use as it is also a form of the "cane"anesthetic family. When you get more than one shot, that means they are working on more than one spot because there are different nerves for every part of your mouth. I think you will need just one shot for your root canal if they're only working on one tooth.

I know that with a cavity, you can have it filled with no pain killer, but they have to drill, and stop and drill and stop, but if they are willing to do that for you, you can get through a cavity filled with no novacain. It just hurts and you say stop and then they do it again, until it's done.
How about clove oil, ask the dentist if you use clove oil, would that be powerful enough for a root canal. That might do it, but I don't know how bad the pain is for a root canal.
Reply:You may have an allergic reaction to carbocaine or lidocaine in a higher dose. Make certain the dentist knows about this. I have a friend who cannot take either so she gets knocked out with an intravenous solution.
Reply:They probably want to make sure you don't feel anything. Root Canals would be painful without it.. Try telling the dentist to use 1 shot if you feel more comfortable with it. I am sure he won't object. But if you start to feel discomfort tell him asap.. He can always give you the other shot. Make sure you tell him also how you feel when you get 2 shots, maybe he can still give you the 2 shots but with a lower dose. Good Luck..

It usually isn't a problem unless the anesthetic is injected directly into an artery. Your dentist should be aspirating during the injection to make sure that that doesn't happen.
Another reason to feel icky is the stress of the situation. No one likes going to the dentist.
Reply:Part of it may be due to your body weight. But, you may be slightly allergic - or at least sensitive - to the shot medication. I would call your dentist and have them put it in your file, and request that before you get another shot your dentist talk with you about your anesthetic options, so you can make a decision about what you want to have in YOUR mouth before the needle gets involved.
I'd get that info into your file asap because sometimes that type of reaction can indicate an allergy that will flare up and can be very dangerous.

My brother's teeth were knocked out. Can he claim compensation?
Hi guys, I need some advice. My 18 year old brother was walking home last Saturday, when 3 hoodies mugged him for a mobile phone and 4 bottles of beer. They kicked him in the face so many times they knocked his front teeth out. His confidence has taken a battering and the unprovoked attack really upset him.
His teeth now have exposed nerves and he is in a lot of pain. No local dentists will take him as they are not accepting new patients, but he can't afford to go private (he's a trainee brick layer and only earns £60 per week). I've offered to pay, but I'm by no means rich, and the money will be taken out of my paltry savings.
I feel that we shouldn't have to pay for the dental work since he was the victim of an unprovoked attack. I'm just wondering whether my brother can claim any compensation for his injuries. The police have been useless, as they haven't even recorded details of the attack on their database (I called for a progress report, and they couldn't find any details).

I had all 4 out in the chair by an oral surgeon. I was lightly sedated, remember everything, it was OK...a bit sore afterwards but make sure they give you pain relief to take home.
Local anaesthetic is fine if they give it properly. I had 16 injections in the mouth when I had mine out, to be honest, I don't remember this as the worst part. The worst part was being at home afterwards...an ice pack on the side of the face will be good.
There are worse things than having wisdom teeth removed, but I understand if you're a bit anxious about it.

I have a molar with an amalgam filling and root canal, and the tooth cracked in half on New Year's Day. The list of local dentists covered by my dental insurance is slim, and the soonest I could get in is this coming Tuesday. Problem is, the tooth has cracked off below the gumline at one point, and I've got swelling and tenderness. I'm regularly rinsing with salt water, and alternating between acetominophen and ibuprofen to supress the pain, which is still at a pretty high level. How do I make it to my appointment as comfortably and safely as possible?

This is a tough one, because with a vertical fracture you will be tearing into the gum and periodontal ligament anytime you bite down. Obviously you need to be on a soft diet, and rinsing will help to drain any infection that's starting.
I would explain your situation to the dentist's emergency service, and see if you can get a referral perhaps to an oral surgeon. Sometimes if the fracture isn't too far under the gumline the tooth can be saved; unfortunately especially for teeth that have had root canals, the fracture is usually such that the tooth needs to be extracted.

Also get some Abesol for tooth pain or clove oil (pure) and apply it to your gums. This will numb the area and make life a little bareable until you see the dentist. If you are afraid of infection, just remember to gargle with something like Listerine a couple times a day, to keep the germ content down in your mouth . Good Luck

Even if the tooth has a root canal, once fractured it can become infected involving swelling and pain. Stick to the ibuprofen 600mg every 4-6 hours to help ease the pain. Advil or Motrin always works better for dental pain. Call your dentist tomorrow morning, he will be able to take care of you before your appointment next week. Sometimes the people who work as receptionist, don't know the first thing about dentistry, it amazes me at the incompetence. It's not just the patients who suffer for this.

I just found out I'm pregnant. A couple weeks ago I had a tooth pulled and the dentist gave me the numbing shots. My uncle said that it could hurt the baby. Does anyone know about that?

They most likely gave you Xylocaine, which is similar to lidocaine. Lidocaine is what they sometimes give you if you are going to have an episiotomy during the birth. The odds are good that the medication you were given for dental work was just fine.
If you are truely concerned, call your dentist and find out what they gave you and let them know that you found out after the fact that you were PG and want to know about any potential effect on baby.
BTW.....I have had dental work done during 2 of my three pregnancies (babies #1 and #3). One pregnancy I had 2 wisdom teeth extracted and on the other I had a root canal. Both with local anesthesia. Both babies were fine. With my 2nd pregnancy I was in a car wreck and had to have local anesthesia to have stitches in my lip. No problems with that either.

So earlier I asked about my symptoms, and got the same response from everyone. You have a tooth abscess! Well, I was researching it and realized that it could be deadly. The infection can spread to the jaw bone, throat(causing you to stop breating) or brain(may need brain surgery then or can cause death). I am really worried because I have been ignoring it for quite a few days! The pain is starting to stop, but reading about it i realized this is when it gets even more dangerous! I need to know how many days do I have left until this can get that serious! Also, I am pretty sure it is on my bottom back tooth, however I have mild pain on my top teeth on the same side? What are the chances of it spreading to my brain? Please answer! I can't get medical attention easily because I live on a college campus and have no car and almost no means of getting by, also i dont really know any local dentists. I can go to the school clinic but dont know how much they can do! Please help!

Actually since you said you're in college, that leads me to believe that you're the age for your wisdom teeth to start cutting up. That would definitely explain the pain on both the upper and lower bones. Wisdom teeth (especially those that are impacted) are boogers! They can make you think you have a brain tumor.

But you are right, in rare cases, an abcessed tooth can be deadly. A woman at my company died from one. But before it gets systemic to the point of death, there is huge swelling, fever, sickness... it isn't somethng that generally sneaks up on you. So anyway, if you have a bad tooth, it is easy to treat. Go to your school clinic and they will give you a round of antibiotics which will knock down the infection in a matter of hours or very few days. After that, go to any dentist and they can treat the problem.

It's possible to have a tooth die (very painful) without becoming infected very quickly(or at all). bottom teeth that are infected will drain downwards and cause swelling of the lower jaw . When swelling restricts your ability to open your mouth is when you are in trouble. It will not spread to top teeth or into the brain. The top tooth probably hurts due to clenching because you are freaked out by all of this. In the last 21 years, I've seen only three people come through the clinics with potentially lifethreatening infections. It happens, but it's uncommon. Use your time wisely to make plans and don't panic.

This past year has been the greatest year of my life but also the toughest, with my wife, Kay, getting cancer.
I used to think that life was hills and valleys.
Yet, now i think of it as kind of like two rails on a railroad track, and at all times you have something good and something bad in your life.
No matter how good things are in your life, there is always something bad that needs to be worked on.
And no matter how bad things are in your life, there is always something good you can thank God for.
You can focus on your purposes, or you can focus on your problems.
If you focus on your problems, you're going into self-centeredness,"which is my problem, my issues, my pain." But one of the easiest ways to get rid of pain is to get your focus off yourself and onto God and others.

Reply:I do not know about Therabreath products, but judging from the mailing information listed on the website, (520 Toa Payoh Lorong 6, #01-59, HDB HUB Singapore 310520) I suppose it is legitamate. Also there is a list of dentists (See Company Information), so perhaps you can find out from one nearest your location or ring up a few clinics.

Could you feel/hear the dentist operating on you when you got your wisdom teeth removed?
I will be put under local anestesia and given the gas mask... what will it feel like?

I felt nothing at all. And had it done with anesthesia and the gas mask. And years later I worked for an Oral Surgeon and found that the doctor can give commands such as open wider and things like that, but you will have no memory of any of that whatsoever. The thing that was terrible after wards for me is I got dry sockets. So be sure to listen to all the info and ask for a sheet of instructions to be sent home with you since you will be groggy after the surgery. Best of Luck!

Reply:I just had my wisdom teeth pulled. Now the first one not bad, but the other one, since it was chipped, when he attempted to pull it did hurt a little, and the denist put the neddle in to numb me. But when it was out, it was done. You do hear it and feel it during the process.
My Suggest, close your eyes and grip the chair.
And if your wisdom teeth are getting pulled (especially the upper) Get ready for about 1 day of eating Jello and soup and going though gauze like hot cakes!

Reply:By "gas mask" I'm assuming you're having nitrous oxide (laughing gas). You'll feel floaty, tingly, but you will be aware of what's going on.
The best way is to have some I.V. sedation, this will make you just not care! Most people ask, "When are you going to start?" after the procedure is over.
