I'm having my upper jaw wisdom teeth removed. My dentist says to have them taken out one at a time. I thought I would have to be knocked out and have an oral surgeon to remove them but this doesn't seem to be the case. What if the teeth are so deep into my jaw that the dentist and his local anestheia is not enough?
What happens during procedure? And what can I expect after?
I'm probably going to be fine but I have stupidly read horror stories about wisdom teeth that I am now in a panic. I can't wait for them to be removed coz they are growing not straight and have pushed my other teeth forward. Will I have to have a brace to push them back or will they re-aligned themselves?
Having my wisdom teeth removed?
I had three removed at one, and I wasn't knocked out. They gave me a local and some "happy gas". The removal itself wasn't too bad. The three days following was pretty uncomfortable. Don't worry, after a week or two you'll get back to normal. Your teeth should move back, but speak to you dentist about that.
Good Luck!
Reply:it hurts reeeaaalll bad. get lots of morphine and vicadin
Reply:If you can: go to an oral surgeon, have them knock you out completely, and get them all removed at once.
Reply:He will just numb your mouth and extract the tooth. All you will experience is a cracking sound. It really isn't that bad. the pain afterward isn't so bad either. You will be fine. As far as you needing braces, thats up to you.
Reply:For a few days afterwards your jaw will hurt, and you will get the nickname "chipmunk cheeks." But they will prescribe painkillers that you can take if you want. Just use those days to chill. I don't believe you will need a brace because your teeth automatically will return to their original positions.
Reply:I had all four removed at the same time from an oral surgeon. Three of them were fully impacted and one was partially impacted. I had "twilight sleep," which I was skeptical of at first because I had wanted to have a general anesthetic....BUT....I don't remember anything and even if I had, it wouldn't have mattered. Twilight sleep is recommendable if you are having more than one tooth at a time....and, personally I think it was better to have them done at once. I only had to live through the aftermath pain once!
Now, my husband recently had one wisdom tooth extracted from his regular dentist and it turned into "the nightmare." I don't want to scare you, but the danger is if the tooth breaks while they are trying to extract it, which is what happened to him. The local anesthesia did not help in this case because she had to dig out the root, which had broken away from the tooth when she pulled it. He endured the pain though...but obviously had not choice in the matter. His dentist told him that this sort of thing happens about once a year...and unfortunately he was the "one".
Good luck, but from my experience and my husband's, I would recommend to do them all at once and under twilight sleep from an oral surgeon.
Regarding the teeth that are misaligned, they should straighten out a bit over time once those teeth are removed, but this also depends on how old you are (the younger the better chance of them moving) and also how your other teeth are affecting the situation.
Wishing you well!
