Alternatives for Numbing gums?

When I go to the dentist it's either a hit or a miss. I've had terrible teeth since I was young and we didn't even have a lot of sweets in the house until I was much older. Whenever I go to the dentist it's always something new. This time the dentist showed me xrays of the root the last dentist supposedly removed with a root canal! Now it's infected and I have to get it removed. The problem?

Numbing me is like playing Russian roulette. You never know if it's going to work. At least 3 different dentists who have used a local on my teeth caused sever pain (like an electric shock) when working on my teeth. It's been going on since I was young. Now I'm too terrified to go. Every time I do they say "oh, we'll be real careful, it won't hurt" yeah, except the last one LEFT THE ROOT IN MY TOOTH.

So now, here I sit with a tooth infection. They told me if I don't number it will be $300 extra to put me under.

Are there any other alternatives? Anyone else like me?? Does nitrous oxide work?

Tnx

Get the nitrous for sure... everything gets groovy! ; )

A root canal doesn't actually remove the root of the tooth, it removes the nerves in it. Sometimes a root canal will get reinfected. It happens. I have had seven root canals so I feel like somewhat of an expert. One of them got reinfected. I had it redone, but it cracked, so I had to have it pulled.

I have trouble getting numb, too. One dentist squirted the novacaine(sp) directly into the tooth before continueing the root canal. Sometimes they just hurt, though.

With the tooth you're talking about, I wouldn't be worried. Chances are, the last dentist left a little of the nerve at the bottom of the root, that has now gotten infected. Most of your tooth is dead, it probably won't hurt much. Be sure you go to a specialist for it this time. DO NOT let your regular dentist do this. It won't work. An Endodontist is what you're looking for. An endodontist will cost more, but they will do it right and you won't end up paying for it again.

Get the nitrous, it's usually about $50 and worth every penny.

And I repeat, do not let your regular dentist do this.
Reply:well i have very sensitive teeth and my dentist wants me to have a root canal or have crowns put on, but i know for sure i am not going to have a root canal! a root canal is basicall taking the nerve out of the tooth, killing the tooth so there wont be any pain. When they do that after a wile the tooth will rott because it is dead. Generally i heard that root canals hurt a lot, if you just get it removed it wont hurt as bad as the root canal, trust me i had 4 working teeth removed at once. i hope i answered your question
